A Company of Voices

As a choral conductor I am quite picky with the choral purchases I make online. I find that most performances fall short of their hype. This is completely not true with this album. Conspirare, under the inspiring direction of Craig Hella Johnson, has taken the choral art to a new and necessary place, namely - classical crossover. Now I'm aware that simple phrase has the power to send shudders through most classical musicians, and I have certainly counted myself in that camp - until now. The seamless way that this album blends inspiring readings of choral classics (such as Barber's 'Agnus Dei' inspired from his much loved 'Adgaio for Strings') with new arrangements of popular song (i.e., 'Let the River Run', originally recorded by Carly Simon) should be upheld as the benchmark for all classical musicians to emulate. It is programming like this that can inspire new audiences and continue to bridge the divide of classical and popular music lovers. On "A Company of Voices" there is no genre distinction - just really good music arranged and sung with deep intent and soulful care. 'Gabriel's Oboe' is a particular highlight for me in this album as is the aforementioned 'Agnus Dei', but the shining star on this album is clearly "Light of a Clear Blue Morning". The soprano is divine, and the arrangement is the perfect adaptation of a wonderful Dolly Parton song. This song is great listening to start your day on the right foot.

If you're looking for a great choral album, you've come to the right place!!!

As a die-hard fan of all choral music, I can honestly say that this album is a must-buy!!! This recording from their PBS special, "A Company of Voices: Conspirare in Concert" brings Austin-based chamber choir, Conspirare to the masses. This "Company of Voices" is steadily gaining recognition throughout the world for their excellence in not only performance, but also programming. Conspirare's artistic director, Craig hella johnson, brings new life and a deeper sense of meaning to the pieces performed. From the joyful, fun and uplifting "Let the River Run", the beautifull arrangement of Dolly Parton's "Light of a Clear Blue Morning", to the powerful and touching "Requiem", listeners will soon realize what they've been missing out on. This CD is sure to bring joy to all who take the time to just listen. =)
