Album Review
Since the band dubbed 2008's For the Love of the Game as "100 percent old-school Pillar," it implies that their next effort takes them in a new direction. And indeed, Confessions finds Pillar not just going through the motions but rather carving out a surprisingly intimate niche for themselves in the melodic rock world. The songwriting core of lead singer Rob Beckley and guitarist Noah Henson collaborated for the first time with writers outside of the band, including Copper's Keith Wallen, Red's Jasen Rauch, Building 429's Jason Roy, Chris Stevens (tobyMac, Sanctus Real), and Skidd Mills (Saving Abel, Skillet). Lyrically, the album focuses on admitting to and dealing with our most personal struggles. The album's first few tracks do so in a made-for-radio rock format, exploring the feelings that typically come from diving deep into one's self. With such a loud, muscular edge, it's surprising how melodic tunes like "Fire on the Inside" and "Secrets and Regrets" come off. Other highlights are the unquenchable riffs of "Whatever It Takes" and the true-to-form cover of Collective Soul's "Shine."

Some real quality music!
I've always enjoyed Pillar and, while I do not own any of their full albums, have bought some of their songs here and there. But with Confessions comes a whole new level for this band, despite member changes, and I'd have to say, I'm way impressed! This is an awesome and heartfelt album that I'm definitely going to buy fully! My faves are 'Fire on the Inside', ''Secrets and Regrets', 'Not Without a Fight', and 'You Are Not the End.' The album flows smoothly but rocks hard!
I hate to say this...
...But this aldum is pretty terrible. Every song sounds the same, the guitar tone is horrible, Rob's vocals sound just like every other post-grunge band on the radio and the lyrics are uninspirid and bland. Pillar said they were aiming on making an album that every song would fit the radio and they succeded and made ten short cookie cutter mainstream hard rock songs. I really love Pillars older albums (Fireprooof, WDWGFH, The Reckoning, and FTLOTG) but with the loss of Kelel and Lester, and the whole "reinventing themselves" they've gone way downhill.
Hopfully the next CD will be good.
