Album Review

Calexico quickly followed their excellent Feast of Wire album with the Convict Pool EP, a collection of covers and original songs that all bear the stamp of the band's dramatic Southwestern sound. The EP kicks off with their version of the Love classic "Alone Again Or," which, along with the title track, was also released as a single in Europe in 2003. Recruiting Swedish singer Nicolai Dunger, Calexico build on the mariachi theme of the original and also give their rendition a more subdued feel. It may not have the heartbreaking drama of Love's rendition, but this version is more than just an experiment and works well on its own terms. The EP's title track, meanwhile, is in keeping with the softer, more singer/songwriter-oriented side of their music, which they explored on Feast of Wire with great success. Joey Burns' pleading vocals and John Convertino's wonderfully expressive — but not flashy — drumming come to the fore on this track as well as their cover of Francoiz Breut's "Si Tu Desais." The second half of Convict Pool lightens up with the rowdy cover of the Minutemen's "Corona," a staple of Calexico's live set, the Eastern European-inspired "Praskovia," and "Sirena," a theatrical original with Spanish backing vocals done by some lovely senoritas. These tracks have more of a "throwaway" feel than the first half of Convict Pool, but it's still a joy to hear Calexico in a looser and more playful mood. That playful mood extends to the EP's multimedia content, an animated short from The Cartoon Network called El Kabong Rides Again that features The Black Light's "Minas del Cobre" as its soundtrack. While this isn't quite as essential a Calexico release as Feast of Wire, Convict Pool is a lot of fun and one of the best short-format works they've issued yet.

My Ambivalence ...

Calexico has not made a bad record. Period. While the sound is rooted in the band's unique alt.cowboy.mariachi.fusion genre of its own making disc after disc, they're all full of surprises and twists that keep the music fresh and worth re-visiting. So ... my ambivalence ... is and has been whether to purchase the physical discs or download the tracks. The artwork is worth having. And the bonus video on Convict Pool is absolutely brilliant; a must have. Conspicuously, it's absent from this offering.

Rangy and Righteous.

The qualities that make Calexico so very cool can also make them hit and miss for me. Not as in "ach, this stinks" but as in "I'm not in the mood now guys, thanks." This EP is so rangy that it covers all the bases from "Not Now" to "Turn It Up Immediately', and it does it in 6 cuts, which may be a weakness for some. The opener is one of my all time faves of Calexico's (or anyone elses for that matter) which for me makes at least that single a must buy, as is the title cut, which while diametrically opposed in mood, is still a big time keeper. The rest are moody, or beautiful, or funny - but they're all good (well, I could skip Corona). Pick and choose if you must, but grab Alone Again and crank it.

Best Yet

I've been a Calexico fan for years, and I have to say this is their best album yet. Every song is wonderful and ranges from melancholy to whimsical. It has half to a third the number of songs on most of their albums, but it's still the one I play over and over again. You won't be disappointed.

Calexico, a Tucson collective of musicians focused around Joey Burns and John Convertino, forged an eclectic identity through their exploration of Southwestern culture. Burns studied classical music at the University of California, Irvine, before starting his rock career, and Calexico formed after Burns met John Convertino...
