Yeah!!
I don't know if many people remember Bette's short, I mean short, lived sitcom on CBS titled "Bette" but I sure watched it. One particular episode mentioned Bette recording a holiday album and like a fool I went looking for it, sweet vindication!! This album contains swingers to say the least but is nowhere near as campy as the album cover suggests, she looks hot in that feather hat and it makes me wonder how many Drag Queens will be reproducing it for their Christmas shows. Bette proves with this album that she can sing anything with her undiminished voice, although I question the re-recording of "From A Distance" although lyrically I understand why it is included here. "White Christmas" produced by Barry Manilow is lifted from her awesome Rosemary Clooney songbook and I have to admit that even though the song is a well known Rosemary Clooney recording, I thought it stuck out on it's original home and it fits better here. I really like the song lineup, Bette could have made a swinging version of "Everybody's Waitin' For The Man With The Bag," we'll have to wait for the next one....When a Jewish girl records a Christmas album the album becomes a timeless classic like what's her name, Barbra??
SO MUCH TO LOVE
First, the killer CD cover is worth the buy. Classic Bette. Classic diva. You have to smile. Now, let's talk about the music. It's different. Not what I expected. Better. She scatters across the genres with traditional Christmas tunes, some swing Christmas tunes and even manges to get in the Hawaiian traditional Christmas song "Mele Kalikimaka" (paying homage to her Hawaiian roots). I'm not digging the remake of her own hit 'From a Distance' as I find that pretty lazy but she's forgiven because of her strong vocals. She SOUNDS like she enjoyed doing this music. I'm not a Bette fan so this is high praise coming from a Christmas music fan.
FROM DISTANCE!
This is going to be a great holidays cd for years to come. Bette has put her stamp on many classics, as well as having reinvented one of her signature songs. Buy this and let the holiday cheer start today!
