Album Review
Stone Temple Pilots were positively vilified once their 1992 debut, Core, started scaling the charts in 1993, pegged as fifth-rate Pearl Jam copyists. It is true that the worst moments of Core play like a parody of the Seattle scene — titles like "Dead and Bloated" and "Crackerman" tell you that much, playing like really bad Alice in Chains parodies, and the entire record tends to sink into gormless post-grunge sludge. Furthermore, even if it rocks pretty hard, it's usually without much character, sounding like cut-rate grunge. To be fair, it's more that they share the same influences as their peers than being overt copycats, but it's still a little disheartening all the same. If that's all that Core was, it'd be as forgettable as Seven Mary Three, but there are the hits that propelled it up the charts, songs that have remarkably stood the test of time to be highlights of their era. "Sex Type Thing" may have a clumsy anti-rape lyric that comes across as misogynist, but it survives on its terrifically lunk-headed riff, while "Wicked Garden" is a surprisingly effective piece of revivalist acid rock. Then, there's the slow acoustic crawl of "Creep" that works as well as anything on AIC's Sap and, finally, "Plush," a majestic album rock revival more melodic and stylish than anything grunge produced outside of Nirvana itself. These four songs aren't enough to salvage a fairly pedestrian debut, but they do find STP to be nimble rock craftsmen when inspiration hits.

Can we fire the AMG reviewer? Please?
While I don't own the entire album, I've heard pretty much every song, and it is truly awesome. And nowhere will you hear an "awful parody" of another great band called Alice in Chains. I mean what is this, 17 years later and you guys are still rippin' on STP? Come on, just admit that they may have derived a bit from their peers (OK, a lot), but they truly made it their own, and this isn't a "copy" of anything. I would consider myself a grunge fan, and, having been born the year this album came out, I heard this music on the radio from the earliest of ages: Pearl Jam, AiC, STP, Nirvana, all that stuff. STP definitely holds their own amongst the rest of the groups. I would even say that their work exceeds everything Nirvana ever did except the MTV Unplugged album (Excellent album. If you don't have it, slap yourself and then go buy it.) . P.S. The lack of reviews for STP's albums shocks me. It's not as if they don't get any radio play anymore... Weird.
Honestly, what the hell?
AMG reviews are about as credible as the Rolling Stone Top 50 lists. While they definitely have a sound that at times cannot be mistaken for anything but Layne Staley singing over hard nosed Alice in Chains-style riffs with all the attitude and emotion of Pearl Jam and the pop appeal of Nevermind-era Nirvana, they are by far not a copy of anything, and in fact use this mash up of sorts to their advantage to create something completely familiar, but also completely new. Even the rather odd and almost unnecessary "Wet My Bed" is still listenable. As for the rest of Core, it's quite obviously top notch material, hands down. The reference to Seven Mary Three is absurd. SMT was one of the most boring bands of the grunge era, and STP could destroy them with their hands tied behind their back. Scott Weiland is an awesome frontman, and this music backs him up to perfection. If you haven't gotten this album yet, do it now. It's a classic of the decade and an essential chapter in the Grunge era that embodies what it was about to be alive in the early 90's. You won't be disappointed.
What is going on???
First off I'd liked to say I'm shocked they're are only 8 reviews. This is a staple album of the 90s and singles like "Plush", "Dead and Bloated", "Wicked Garden", ect rack up plenty of play time on the local rock station. STP is no immitation, while they may have been influenced by grunge greats, (i.e Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam) they made a mark of they're own in the the grunge era that is failed to be recognized here on iTunes. Scott Wielland's voice mixed with beatiful sludgy but groovey riffs makes almost every track on Core one worth savoring. A must for any grunge or hard rock fan
