Shimmering guitar rock laced with beautiful beats

This record is a a revolutionary departure from Shriekback's already unusual canon. It builds on previous releases but the real beauty here is the finely produced details of layers upon layers of sound textures that positively impress that this band has progressed into a new category of essentialness despite some trips into box canyons in the past. It's a truly remarkable record. Always a difficult band to define, I compare their expansive and experimental sound here to such ambitious projects as the Cure's Disintegration, Wilco's Being There, Slint, and Yo La Tengo's Painful, and finally My Bloody Valentine's perfect Loveless -- all disparate sounds but similar in breadth, sense of urgency in the music, and production details that are integral to the sound of the record without making the listener aware of any sound engineering at all. It's as though the music always existed and you happened upon it as an immense bank of living cryptobiotic sound whilst navigating a roiling fog-shrouded ocean in a rocking but sturdy boat. You feel confident listening to this highly experimental record: that once the dance lights go down and the crowd goes home that you're going to be in just as good a place at 8AM as you were at 8PM the night before and for the long forever hereafter. The backend seems designed for the slow, easy, evoked release necessary and justified for the zealous and purposeful odyssey on which you've just committed. Cormorant, perhaps is not the record for the Shriekback neophyte to begin their journey with the band, but for the experienced listener it is their most satisfying record to date. Continue the journey into more familiar territory with Glory Bumps, another stellar late release from the band.

yes -- but...

I wouldn't go quite as far as the previous reviewer but wouldn't argue either. HOWEVER, note that there are two versions of this album and the other version costs the same but has 4 bonus tracks. There's probably a reason they weren't included in the original album but there's no reason not to have them.

Biography

Formed: 1982 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '80s, '90s

Shriekback is not an easy band to classify. They borrowed heavily from funk but had a very different agenda; their music was more suited for contemplation than for parties. They combined synthesizers and drum machines with throbbing bass lines and unorthodox vocals to evoke a primordial world where the line between human and animal was blurred. The title of their fourth album, Big Night Music, might be the most succinct summation of their work: Shriekback's music was always an appropriate soundtrack...
