iTunes Review

Cosmic Egg isn’t a big departure from 2006’s eponymous debut. They still sound enamored with heavy psychedelic rock of the late-‘60s and early-‘70s — so much now that Wolfmother has become part of the genre. But singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale wisely imports some anachronistic innovation allowing Wolfmother to be considered a new branch on an old tree (rather than a mere clone). “New Moon Rising” rocks and rumbles like a denim- and leather-clad biker gang storming through a small town. Contrasting sternum-rattling rawk riffs with smart and catchy melodies comes off like a cross pollination between Black Sabbath and White Stripes. Because he wails with a natural vibrato on those high notes Stockdale will always get compared to Jack White, but musically these songs rock with an authentic authority of their own and Wolfmother’s timeless tunes like “Pilgrim” and “Phoenix” could easily be played on classic rock stations that still “get the Led out.”

Evolution.

Cosmic Egg... I have been waiting forever to hear some new Wolfmother material ever since some of the original band members split. Although I was skeptical to hear the new sound they probably acquired, I was far from disappointed. It seems they are reaching closer to Zepplins roots, while staying progressive. Still carrying the some of the same fast paced riffs from the first album, diehard Wolfmother fans and new recruits are guarenteed to find something to love on this album. Cosmic Egg is absolutely darker, but definetly for the better. (See 10,000 feet and Cosmic Egg) Slowed down however, this album allows the listener to absorb the raw power within it. I'm very satisfied of the new direction Wolfmother is taking.

Highly Flammable

I once listened to this album on my ipod while raking leaves. I dare you to try it and not have your rake turn into a flaming guitar. And I dare you not to play it. My neighbors gave me funny looks when I did, so they obviously have never heard this album.

downgrade from former perfection

a new screaming guitar is awesome, but it doesnt sell an album for me.
i dont know why, but their old sound was just so much better. cosmic egg sounds like a rehash. its catchy at times, so i wont say its terrible. sadly, im gonna chalk this one up to background music.

look forward to hearing "Palace of Fire", the old bassist/keyboardist and drummer's band.

Biography

Formed: 2000 in New South Wales, Australia

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Truly a band out of time, the Australian power trio Wolfmother were conceived in 2000 — about 30 years too late, considering that the musicians' psychedelic brand of proto-heavy metal sounded similar to the late-'60s/early-'70s craft of Blue Cheer and Black Sabbath. Comprised of vocalist/guitarist Andrew Stockdale, bassist/organist Chris Ross, and drummer Myles Heskett, Wolfmother took the initiative of recording a four-track demo in 2004 for the purpose of booking shows. So sterling were the...
