Customer Reviews
The first review is slanderous!
First of all, it was the French organist/composer Louis Marchand who fled from a competition against Bach, NOT Le Grand François Couperin! Regarding this recording, it is okay - nothing more, nothing less. Hewitt is obviously a technically superior performer, but these works all sound somewhat flat. Personally, I think that the vast majority of Couperin's keyboard works sound pedestrian on the modern piano. Compare "Les Baricades Mistérieuses" played by Hewitt with the same piece played by Igor Kipnis on a harpsichord. If you have a strong distaste for the sound of the harpsichord, I guess this recording is the best you are going to get. But if you really want to hear Couperin as he is meant to be heard, check out some Kipnis recordings as well as Christophe Rousset. Both performers do justice to Couperin's mastery of composing for the harpsichord.
Great music played superbly
This music was made for the technique Angela Hewitt excels in, namely keeping the threads distinct and clearly delineated, and the focus on the ideas, not her. I find it endlessly satisfying.
