iTunes Review

This Brendan O’Brien-produced album ambitiously pieces together epic metal songs arranged with progressive tempo and key changes. The lyrics unravel a fantastical story about a paraplegic who can only travel out of body. He burns his anchor to reality and is lost in space until getting sucked through a wormhole and into the spirit world where ghosts send him to Tsarist Russia, putting his soul inside Rasputin’s body (who is murdered after trying to usurp the czar). The protagonist’s soul must then fly home while the Devil tries to trick him. The dark and brooding “Oblivion” unfolds with otherworldly sonic textures orbiting around jet fueled guitars, bludgeoning rhythms, and the menacing croons of Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds braiding together on darkened harmonies. The relentless juggernaut that is “Divinations” plays and pounds more fiercely than any other cut here. Scott Kelly of Neurosis fame sings the title track with a blood gargling timbre before “The Last Baron” bookends the album by bringing it all together with weighty closure.

So close to 5 stars

I don't throw around 4 or 5 star reviews with carelessness. I think 3 stars is a wonderful effort. This album is one of the first times I've had to flip flop between 4 and 5. Outstanding and highly mature for where the band is in their career. There are a couple of tracks I would use to introduce people not just to Mastodon, but to this entire genre of music. Personally, I think this is about as good as it can get. Although I hope these cats prove me wrong with their next effort. Also, big thanks to the band for not taking 5 years between releases. Great album. Don't hesitate with your $10.

Mastodon! Amazingly heavy and melodic!

Mastodon succeeded in making another kickass album. This album is a lot more melodic than the last few, which were more of "really heavy" and reall "in your face" type of stuff. The two singles Divinations and Oblivion made me wonder what the rest of the album would sound like. With some of the new acoustic material and added guitar solos, I was impressed with what they were doing. Brent's injury really put a creative kick to his writing, and the band said that they would treat this album as if it were their last. Great Job You Guys!! Everyone should get this album, this is one of their best works yet!!!! 5/5

Amazing

"don't stay, run away
He's ordered assassination"-The czar
I can listen to these songs all day!!!! How in héll did this masterpeice only sell 250,000 albums so far? Holy CRAP!! This album is so amazing!!!

Divinations 7/10
Not the best opener ever, but it's still one that I'll listen to and it's the most remicent of old Mastodon

The Czar 10/10 I quoted this song up there and I'll love this song, amazing vocals, chilling bass, guitars that I'll catch stuck in my head, and be happy that it is!!!!

Crack The Skye 9/10 If you were woundering why it's spelt "Skye" it's because Branns sister killed herself when she was 14 and he made this album for her. Great song, amazing meaning, weird electronic thing in the middle though, kinda weird..

The last Baron 10/10 extremely long, great tempo change. Could of made like three diferent songs out of this! Correction: three amazing songs outa this.
