iTunes Review
The continuing adventure of Jason Statham’s scowling hitman Chev Chelios is another hyper-manic, cross-cultural fusion, not so much a shotgun wedding of Hong Kong action film flair and relentless Silicon Valley video game violence as it is a honeymoon in Hades. This surging, playfully inventive score by former Mr. Bungle/Faith No More mainstay Mike Patton not only paces the action, but occasionally deftly underplays it to good effect with dank, moody textures and a world-beat sensibility that occasionally verges on the satirical. Sparking with metallic edges, club beats, recycled funk rhythms and a grab-bag of nervous percussive-electronic samples, Patton’s score veers across genres with the reckless abandon of the film’s ticking time bomb of a protagonist. Less adventurous instincts might have yielded the typical contemporary electronica pastiche, but the fledgling composer (this is but his second full feature score) mostly avoids those clichés with a sometimes loopy sense of musical humor worthy of Les Claypool.

He does it Again
Being heavily influenced by great composers such as Ennio Morricone and Gerry Goldsmith, has inspired Mike Patton to write one of the most original and daring film scores in recent memory. I have been a huge fan of his music since a very young age and have followed his extremely diverse musical career for the last 20 years. Mike's music always had very cinematic qualities to it as examplified especially with his band fantomas, and it seems that film scoring is a natural and seemles progression for him as an artist. In the score for Crank, Mike uses his diverse bag of tricks and endless sound palette to perfection, and the dynamic range of the music is staggering. it seems as though the art of theme and variation has been lost and forgotten by many of today's so called film composers, yet Patton understands that a good theme creates an identity for the character, and helps to tell a story . Patton's use theme and variation throughout the score is very effective and while listening to it i could feel and see what the main character was going through. Trasitioning seemlesly from demented metal, to funk, to Breakbeat to whatever he wants it to, the score never ceases to surprise and excite the listener. I would highly recommend this score to any mike patton fan as well as anybody who wants to hear something fresh and original yet highly intentional. I can't wait for this movie to come out and see how it plays out with the visuals. It will be one hell of a ride
Genius Srikes Again!
I know it is absolutely pathetic that a man who has lived nearly 40 years in the greatest country on the planet should get so depressed during the gaps between Mike Patton albums, but I don't even notice it when I'm in the throes of the funk. I don't writhe around naked in a corner coated in crisco oil screaming WHY between painful crying jags, and I never will reach that point. When I finally have one of his compositions ringing in my ear, however, I realize how much precious time I've wasted screaming at pinecones just to get a reaction, just to feel something. I guess what I'm saying is that you probably shouldn't come to this feller for objectivity on anything that has Mike Patton's name on it. Cheese and crackers this thing is good though. The opening track Kickin' is a punk song with just a hint of Patton's vocals playing in the distance. Chickenscratch is the next out of this world composition. Doc Miles, Social Club, Chocolate Theme, Shock and Shootout, Sping Loaded, Catalina Island, Supercharged, and what may be the best track on the album Hammer Drops. If you're not into the entire album, and most of the 32 tracks are atmospheric, then just download these. You can hear the Ennio Morrcone influence, but Great Gretzky's ghost it's original. It has a vibe that most artists would give their left one to hammer out, but Mike Patton appears to do it effortlessly. It tops his "Perfect Place" sountrack by a mile, and I really liked that, but then again I'm far from objective.
this album is DOPE!
There just are not words to describe or explain how insanely cool these tunes are. Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Etc) is a genius. This just may be the freshest soundtrack to be released in a long time! I can not wait to see the film!
