iTunes Review

Though Jeff Bridges’ grizzled protagonist in Crazy Heart looks and even sings like Americana adonis Kris Kristofferson, Bad Blake was also inspired by Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard. Initially, director Scott Cooper wanted to make a biopic on Haggard, but rights to the country music legend’s life story were not available, so he instead wrote this trio of influential characters into the adaptation of the same-named 1987 novel by Thomas Cobb. The film also serves as a dedication to Texas troubadour Stephen Bruton who passed away from cancer months after writing the songs that Bridges sings here. And with T-Bone Burnett’s timeless touch in production, it’s not so surprising how good Bridges sounds. Whether he’s crooning a love song like the opening “Hold On You” as though he’s been doing it all his life or rootsy, rowdy, roadhouse stompers like the instantly likeable “Somebody Else” as well as straight-up country-rock numbers like “Fallin’ & Flyin’” — he sounds authentic enough to sit naturally alongside twangy classics by Buck Owens, the Louvin Brothers, Kitty Wells, George Jones and others.

Excellent Rootsy Americana Country -- The Good Stuff!

Much has been made of Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett's win for Best Song for "The Weary Kind" at the Golden Globes this past weekend. And while that song is indeed a worthy contender for song of the year, the real star of this soundtrack is unsung country "legend" Stephen Bruton, who passed away from cancer just two weeks after completing his work on this soundtrack. He co-wrote and co-produced several tracks with Burnett, and it is Bruton's contributions that give the film its gravitas and authenticity. Tracks like "Hold On You" (a worthy Best Song contender for the Oscar), "Somebody Else," "I Don't Know" and "Fallin' & Flyin'" really root Jeff Bridges' character, Bad Blake, in road-weary blues. All are performed in the film (by Bridges, Bingham and Colin Farrell, who sings a lot better than one might expect him to), and all are instant Americana treasures. Bingham's two contributions, "Gone, Gone, Gone" (performed by Farrell) and "The Weary Kind" are also the kind of hard-scrabbled country tracks that you think you've heard before, even though you haven't until now, and they provide the movie with even more dusty-back-road earthiness. The soundtrack is rounded out with familiar classics like Waylon Jennings' never-gets-old "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," George Jones' "Color of the Blues" and Kitty Wells' "Searching (For Someone Like You)," plus newer "classics" like Lucinda Williams' "Joy" and Sam Phillips' "Reflecting Light." All of the newer songs -- either written, chosen or produced by old friends Burnett and Bruton -- are just dandy, and all of them provide a solid backdrop to Bad Blake's trials and tribulations. If you're a fan of Steve Earle, Matthew Ryan and Ryan Bingham, then this is definitely a soundtrack you should pick up. I was eagerly anticipating its release after seeing the film, and I haven't stopped listening to it since I picked it up this afternoon. This is just the kind of foot-stomping, hand-clapping country music that makes me wish I could pick up a guitar and write my own music, then go out and perform it in a red-brick-floored bar somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Check it out.

Can't Miss Roots Music

Tremendous snapshot of real music that's played every day that corporate radio ignores. Not a contrived collection any more than Bridges' amazing performance is a ruse. Bridges has been playing this kind of music for the heck of it for years--glad he had a chance to do it in this film. The unsung hero of this album Stephen Bruton, whose guitar playing is on a par with Ry Cooder and Keith Richard. Check out From the Five and Spirit World. If you love this album, you'll be floored by Bruton's own work.

I miss REAL country music

This movie and soundtrack make me long for the 70s and 80s country music of my youth. It was real, it meant something. What you hear today, labeled as country, is about as country as a high rise apartment in the heart of the Big Apple... this is the REAL thing!
