iTunes Review

This is the second release from Throw Me The Statue and the biggest difference between this and their fine debut, Moonbeams, is that it’s no longer a Scott Reitherman one-man project. Now a quartet, the sound is fuller and more dynamic and the added input helps flesh out Reitherman’s quirky and lovable songs. Despite a rather narrow singing range, Reitherman wrings a great deal of emotion and variety from his sweet vocals, giving life to his oblique and intriguing lyrics. The tunes are well crafted and cleverly layered and they manage to fill up a lot of background space with keyboards and sundry electronica without smothering the songs or coming off as too dense. Memorable moments abound, such as the glockenspiel and horn break on “Waving At the Shore,” the ultra-catchy guitar hook of “Hi-Fi Goon,” and the synth riff on “The Outer Folds” to name but a few. Creaturesque is a charming indie-pop release with lasting power.

I like TMTS but...

I'm not going to buy this album... I loved their album "Moonbeams" and while this release sounds much fuller (especially on the song "Tag") it just doesn't tickle my fancy like their debut. However, I think I will get "Noises" and "Hi-Fi Goon." But for right now I'm just gonna go listen to "Lolita."

Stellar. Pop. Album.

Well, they've done it again. Throw Me The Statue has made my favorite album of the year and the best sunshine music I could hope to play from my boombox. The songs are great, varied and dynamic. A refined version of last year's Moonbeams, this one slays!

*jaw drops*

Throw Me The Statue was opening for another band and we fortunately got to the show early enough to catch their live show. I was stunned by the energy, originality and craft Reitherman and company cranked out on the stage. This album is no less amazing - each track reveals more depth of lyrical and melodic intelligence the more I listen to it. Notice reading through the reviews here that each reviewer names different 'must-have' songs and I feel that way too: one of these songs will be on my Best of 2009 mix but which one, well, that changes by the day.

Taking the moniker Throw Me the Statue from an old mixtape title, one-man multi-instrumentalist Scott Reitherman relocated from Half Moon Bay, a small city south of San Francisco, to New York and then Seattle with aspirations of starting up an independent label called Baskerville Hill Records. Inspired by the lo-fi and D.I.Y. sensibilities of K Records, he started putting out CDs in 2004, including one by fellow Vassar College student Sam Beebe (aka Black Bear). Around the same time, Reitherman started...
