iTunes Review

The fourth full-length by Canadian trio Timber Timbre wades through a murky swamp of gothic folk, with occasional nods to ‘50s doo-wop and horror movies (sometimes, as on the waltzing “Woman,” those genres meet up). Creep On is not as minimalist as 2009’s self-titled release, and not as full of hillbilly warp as earlier records. There is more traditional song hook-age here, memorable tunes imbued with the rich, evocative storytelling style of the two Nicks (Lowe and Cave, with “Bad Ritual” and “Creep On Creepin’ On” strongly evoking the latter). Spare and brooding numbers — like “Lonesome Hunter” and  “Black Water” — feel surprisingly multi-dimensional with their quivering strings and sinister piano strikes. Instrumentals, such as album closer “Souvenirs,” are impressive pieces of new music expressionism, showing the true depths of main man Taylor Kirk’s talent pool. The underplayed drama of Autoharp and strings along with samplers and loops (and the handiwork of guest saxophonist extraordinaire Colin Stetson, who takes the potent “Do I Have Power” to a whole new place) work beautifully with Kirk’s coal-dust voice in creating a deeply alluring aural tapestry.

spooky fun!

Absolutely love it! I'm captivated by its yeaster-year sound---a bit of mid century goodness mixed with some pagan blood.

Important Growth

I really liked their previous self-titled album, but this album shows definite growth, especially in the arrangement and *gasp* occasional back-up vocals. I think people are either going to completely dig Timber Timbre's sound, or not really get it, but this album is definitely more accessible musically. Although still firmly entrenched in their folk-alternate foundations, there is some definite doo-wop and pop influences here, contorted into the groups hallmark sound. Creep On Creepin' On is often, well, kind of creepy, but it's always greatly entertaining and an unadulterated pleasure.

4.5/5 stars.

Creep on!!!

If I had to choose two words to describe this album they would be

Creepy and Amazing

The haunted-sounding Canadian indie folk act Timber Timbre feature singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Taylor Kirk, who is supported by keyboardist/percussionist/violinist Mika Posen and guitarist/percussionist Simon Trottier. Taking inspiration for the project's name from a cabin in Ontario where Kirk made some of his first recordings, Timber Timbre released two albums, 2006’s Cedar Shakes and the following year’s Medicinals, independently before signing to the Canadian imprint Arts & Crafts....
