Album Review

Supertramp came into their own on their third album, 1974's Crime of the Century, as their lineup gelled but, more importantly, so did their sound. The group still betrayed a heavy Pink Floyd influence, particularly in its expansive art rock arrangements graced by saxophones, but Supertramp isn't nearly as spooky as Floyd — they're snarky collegiate elitists, an art rock variation on Steely Dan or perhaps a less difficult 10cc, filled with cutting jokes and allusions, best heard on "Bloody Well Right." This streak would later flourish on Breakfast in America, but it's present enough to give them their own character. Also present is a slight sentimental streak and a heavy fondness for pop, heard on "Dreamer," a soaring piece of art pop that became their first big hit. That and "Bloody Well Right" are the concise pop moments on the record; the rest of Crime of the Century is atmospheric like Dark Side of the Moon, but with a lighter feel and a Beatles bent. At times the album floats off into its own world, with an effect more tedious than hypnotic, but it's still a huge leap forward for the group and their most consistent album outside of that 1979 masterwork, Breakfast in America.

Ok...so I'm trying not to fall out of my chair while reading the review of Crime...Has this person ever sat down, popped on some headphones and actually let this disc take them into an audiophiles dreamworld...I sincerely doubt it.
Crime of the Century was one of the top 3 best produced and sonically engineered albums of all time. Every track on this disc can stand on it's own. Though I don't listen to Supertramp as much as I used to, each and every time a song from Crime comes into my ears, a smile crosses my face. Now that is MUSIC!

What do you expect from the best band ever?

First, ALL the songs are amazing! Strangely, on the radio, they NEVER play songs by Supertramp. Dont ask me why, i would like to know also. Amazing songs, amazing band, almost the only album that has 5 STARS that i saw on iTunes. What happened to music? Nobody will ever know.

An Absolute Gem

I purchased this album about a year and a half ago. I went through the whole album pretty quickly. I couldn't find anything that I didn't like about it. All of the songs are catchy, grooving, and beautiful, all at the same time. The flow of this album is just great. I like that lonely harmonica that starts out "school". It almost gives me chills. For that matter, the long, instrumental jam at the end of "Crime of the Century" is the most fitting way to end the album. Listen closely, the same harmonica lick resurfaces underneath the other instruments
The flow almost seems to suggest a continuous narrative, like a concept album. What more can I say? Superb writing, flow, everything.
