Album Review

Over the course of the two EPs leading up to the release of their first album, Denmark’s Northern Portrait made their love of jangling guitars, sweet melodies, and the Smiths, specifically the vocals of Morrissey, very clear. Criminal Art Lovers takes the template of the EPs and increases the melodic quotient and boosts the jangle perceptibly. The opening tracks "The Münchhausen in Me" and "When Goodness Falls" promise an album of sugar-coated melancholy indie pop gems, and the rest of the affair lives up to the promise. The sound the trio creates is nearly perfect East Village/Commotions-style sophisti-pop with layers of acoustic and electric guitars shimmering like the surface of a lake on a summer day, the drums bolstered by tambourines and subtle keys adding some smooth texture. It’s the kind of sound made for a walk through the park with the sunlight filtering down through the trees, warming your sad heart. The only problem is with Stefan Larsen's vocals. Well, it’s a problem if you find the arch, affected vocal style popularized by Morrissey to be a distraction. Larsen is so in thrall to the style that it’s a little hard to take his lyrics seriously and his yodeling falsetto swoops and self-conscious twists effectively ruin the mood at times. He sounds more interested in being interesting than conveying any emotion. Whether or not the record works is probably down to the listener’s tolerance for Larsen's vocals, which is too bad since the music is so well constructed and pretty.

Pure jangle-pop delight!

Fan of The Smiths, Gene, or Trashcan Sinatras? Then do yourself a favor and buy this and both of NP's EPs. You will love yourself for it!

WOW

I am the first to review this album on Itunes !!!!
All I have to say : A Work Of Art !!!!

Euro jangle-pop perfection!

I couldn't say Brit jangle-pop, since NP is from Denmark, but you would think....

Honestly folks, this album ranks right up there with classics like "Cake" by The Trashcan Sinatras and "The Queen is Dead" by the Smiths. Notice I said "ranks right up there", not surpasses, so don't get your shorts all in a bunch.

NPs first two EPs really set the tone for this band. What I like about this long-player is that it is all new songs, except for a slight re-production of "Crazy", which is a crazy-good song. My favorites are the two songs which co-written, the first being "When Goodness Falls". Just fantastic.

This album simply made me feel good. It takes you back to a certain sound that just "fits" when you listen to it.

Buy this, and get these guys to come tour North America...

Biography

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Northern Portrait emerged on Matinee's roster a mere two months after they were founded, with a sleek, reverb-slicked sound — headed up by Stefan Larsen's melancholy caterwaul — that harked back to the Smiths and nodded to contemporaries like the Mary Onettes and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart. The band formed in Copenhagen, Denmark, in the summer of 2007 (July, to be exact) with Larsen, Michael Sorenson, and Rune Reholt. Larsen and Sorenson had known each other since they were children,...
