Last Date with Collin Walcott
The band's spiritual home was always the ECM label. Their first recording as a unit was issued under the "Towner/Moore with McCandless and Walcott" moniker on ECM; but it's a collection of trios, duos and solos as the band was disallowed by their contract with Vanguard from performing all at once on a different label. The first recording by the band for ECM issued under the name of Oregon came in 1982 as a stunning set of group improvisations (hopefully to be brought to iTunes someday). This follow-up explored the compositional end of their musical spectrum. Ralph Towner's compositions seem less prevalent on Crossing than other offerings by the band, but include two of my favorite pieces by him: Amaryllis and The Glide. Glen Moore's Bartok inflected Kronack Waltz and Pepe Linque are included, as well as Collin Walcott's beautiful Travel By Day (another take on the Travel By Night he recorded with Don Cherry and Nana Vasconcelos as Codona). I really miss Collin Walcott. He was a master musician and a visionary. I think this was his last recording; it was certainly the original Oregon's swan song, not to be missed.
A good album with exquisite gems
Although I have an affinity for the 2 other ECM albums, this one has compositions that leave me breathless, and wishing for Collin's return just to add 2 more of his compositions. Of course, that request is quite an undertaking. However, because of the sheer strength of most of the compositions on this album, Crossing remains to be a classic of its own. Two songs on this album have had me in tears by their sheer beauty. Ralph is a genius, there's no doubt about that, but on this album Glen, Paul and Collin definitely display that sheer ingenuity as well, and for me remain just as outstanding composers in their own mediums.
