No Way! 1973?
No Way this album came out in 1973. If that is the case.....These guys were way ahead of the game. I can imagine what people thought of this band back in '73.
Essential Sludge.
Born out of the swamps (and vibrant hardcore/metal scenes) of New Orleans, Louisiana, Crowbar crafted a unique, slot-then-fast-then-osbcenely-slow approach that, while retaining the same basic DNA of other NOLA bands like Eyehategod and Acid Bath, they went in a far more melodic direction than any of their scene contemporaries, informed by the band's love of NWOBHM acts like UFO. This strange pairing of brilliantly crafted melody and grimy sludge created a sound that could accurately be described as depression in musical form (the same could be said about some of the other slo-mo acts that came up in the early-to-mid 90's, though for different reasons). It could also be described as heavy as f*ck.
Make no mistake about it - this is one of the best slow metal albums ever recorded, and certainly Crowbar's magnum opus. It's up there with Dopesick and Through Silver And Blood and NOLA and Bloody Kisses and anything else you care to name. Beautifully ugly guitar playing, mollases-thick bass, punishing drums, and, of, course, Kirk Windstein's tortured howl and brilliant lyrics. Definitely worth your time and money.
