Album Review
Sizzla’s massive discography has more than its fair share of suspicious releases, most of which drive away new listeners with sub-par material and poor documentation. Crucial Times suffers from the latter in that there are no track by track credits — although there is an excellent essay — but the material is top-notch, all of it pulled from the Grove Road vaults of producer Homer Harris and much of it unheard. Given the one-two opening punch of “Precious Gift” and “Crucial Time,” the album could easily be mistaken for one of Sizzla’s official releases if it wasn’t for the fact that the sound field changes significantly between the two tracks, signaling that they come from different studios and different time periods. Speaking of time periods, the liner notes claim “Foundation” is from the first time the singer stepped into the studio, and supports the argument with a picture of a 15 year-old Sizzla on his way to school. Other highlights come from what are obviously later years, as the smooth and modern “Jolly Good Time” flows like a Third World or Maxi Priest tune, while “Sufferation and Poverty” uses a jungle/drum'n'bass beat for a futuristic ragga experience. More info and this collection would be a revelation, but as it is, it’s a welcome surprise and should have all Sizzla fans wondering what other undiscovered gems this Bobo Dread has lost to the vaults.

The Return Of Sizzla!
He never left really! But there are glimses of the young firestarter's sound linking back to his debut Burning Up & seminal album Kalonji. Phillip "Fattis" Burwell (Xterminator) no doubt refined Sizzla's sound. As Coxsone Dodd & Lee Scratch was instrumental to the Wailers, Homer Harris & Fattis defined Sizzla's earliest works. It was Homer Harris who discovered and gave Sizzla his name while he was still studying engineering in school. Greensleeves has done right by Sizzla over the years too. Ghetto Youthology & Soul Deep are just a few manifested works through this vessel. Sizzla continues to experiment with his voice here. "Rat Race" and "Foundation" sounds like freshly reworked bonus tracks from Burning Up. "Crucial Times," "Charming," & "There's No Pain" has had their turn on other albums before. "Jolly Good Time" is just that. The highlights are "Take A Stand," "Agriculture & Education," & "Get Rid Ah Dem." As Sizzla says, "Reach Perfection, Drink From The Well." There is a sip here for everyone. Drink up and be upful.
the man
Sizzla has so many albums it isnt even funny. maybe he couldve done better but i still like it. I used to have several albums that are not available in the iprunes store. wtf is up with that. get all the sizzla albums up here. some i might buy again like sizzla and friends.
Foundation Kalonji
Some of you writing reviews on here, obviously are just fans of hits and not fans of the artist. Sizzla is a true artist, even crossing over into different genres to manifest his talent. (Check out "Addicted") This album contains some of his earliest works while being groomed under Homer Harris. You can hear the promise of the now reggae superstar and it is worth a listen. While reappearing songs on different albums/compilations have always been an issue throughout his career, Greensleeves has packaged this one beautifully. Such a prolific artist, he has more albums than some other acts entire career catalog, with Greensleeves and VP at the helm. Looking forward to the next project. Big up yuh self, Kalonji !!
