An amazing album from an amazing band.

I tend to get carried away when discussing my feelings about Mates of State. I start to throw around words like "sublime," "transcendent," etc., and most people think im exaggerating. But something about the blend of the drums and piano, Kori and Jason's voice, the impenetrable "wall of sound" style that has put this band on the map, carries this music to heights I would have thought impossible for just two people to achieve.

"Laura" is a fun start to the album, very much in line with Mates of State albums of the past, laced with twisting synth and upeat lyrics. "Son et Lumiere," however, is new territory for the band. The first half of the song is haunting, much like the original by Mars Volta. However, the song is capped by a pillowy trumpet melody, a far cry of turbulent finish to the Mars Volta version. The ending of this song is a thing of beauty, belied by the symplicity of the combination of Kori's voice and the somehow delicate trumpet.

"Son et Lumiere" is a perfect lead-in to "Sleep the Clock Around." This song is just pure fun, with driving acoustic rhythms and a wonderful blend of Kori and Jason's voices. Also, the trumpet returns at the end of this song, providing a wonderful flourish to the end of perhaps my favorite song on the album.

After perhaps the best opening trio of tracks to start a Mates of State album to date, "Technicolor Girls" manages to maintain the energy captured from the first three tracks even with the slower tempo of the song and less ambitious instrumentals. It lets you catch your breath without being bored, a feat achieved rarely in nearly any album. "Long Way Home" then follows with classic Mates of State sound, which is never a bad thing. Kori's vocals in this song are especially good.

"Love Letter," once again, takes Mates of State to new heights. This time, Jason's vocals are the highlight and are extremely moving and set a dark but hopeful mood for the song. The bridge is extremely powerful, relying on forceful bass from the piano and gorgeous vocal harmonies.

"Secondhand News" is proof that, once again, Mates of State will never bring you down without brining you back up. This song is pure happiness and pure Mates of State. This is followed by "17 Pink Sugar Elephants," a sweet song that features Kori and Jason's daughter Magnolia.

"Roller Coaster Ride" is a great penultimate track, a short but powerful song which takes a few listenings to truly appreciate. "True Love Will You in the End" is a magnificent cap. I find that Mates of State has done the best job of any band i've listened to in terms of ending their albums with songs that pull the albums together and unify the album while also being great standalone tracks. This song is no different. The song has a hopeful message, and Kori carries the album away with the outro of this song with her unmatchable voice.

On paper, this album is a 30 minute hodgepodge of random covers. Yet, the album works as a whole quite remarkably. I can't stop listening to this album. If you've never listened to Mates of State, this a fine intro into a magnificent band. Kori and Jason are genuinely wonderful people, and that comes across in their music. Also, i discovered this band during a particurarly turbulent period in my life. If you are going through tough times, this music is inexplicably uplifting. If times are good for you, Mates of State is a perfect soundtrack as well. Either way, pick up this album and support a band that never ceases to produce ambitious, heartfelt music.

SOUNDS CHEESY AT FIRST...BUY IT ANYWAY.

I used to be a lukewarm mates of states fan,
now I've been converted, beautiful wondrous experimental music.
their voices really add sweet dynamic to the covers.
Anything but music for musics sake...

see you in baton rouge!

I'll give them 2 stars for having the balls to cover mars volta

but did not work for me at all... I enjoy covers usually, these ones not so much.
