iTunes Review
A couple of decades ago, a mini-wave of scorching, howling psych-punk bands from Australia, like the Lime Spiders and the swampier Beasts of Bourbon and Scientists, spearheaded a revival of ‘60s-based rock, laced with a heavy dose of grimy, boot stomping punk snottiness. Crystal Antlers, from the unlikely environs of Long Beach, CA, are here to resurrect it. Their debut EP, produced brilliantly by Ikey Owens of The Mars Volta (no strangers themselves to multitudinous layers of sound), is nearly 30 minutes of raucous, mind-blowing (not to mention eardrum-splitting) rock, full of violent guitars, lysergic keyboards and throat ravaging vocals. Singer Johnny Bell’s vocal gymnastics on “Until the Sun Dies, Pt. 2” and “Vexation” chase the unleashed power of the songs full throttle (class: compare and contrast to the Beasts of Bourbon’s “Make ‘em Cry” ... yeah!), and even the long-haired meanderings of “Owl” and “Parting Song for the Torn Sky” have a contemporary, dangerous edge.
Customer Reviews
Yes, yes, yes!
This is why iTunes is the best in the online music market. They continue to introduce and include up and coming artists and new music not available elsewhere. I'm guilty of having first heard of these guys through Pitchfork, but I'm glad I did, I was hooked the first time I listened to A Thousand Eyes. Can't wait to see them live this weekend as I've heard they put on an all out performance. They show a lot of promise with this EP so here's hoping their debut does good with that promise.
Excellent
I was pleasantly surprised to see this EP finally up in the store. The band has an amazing sound. I can only recommend you see them live, at least once. You'll be automatically hooked. The live show is filled with such energy in both the music and the frantic antics of the great Sexual Chocolate. A must buy, as well as a must see.
