Album Review

Crimson & Clover, the highest charting album by Tommy James And The Shondells (it made the Top 10), marked the arrival of the group's psychedelic style and featured the chart-topping title tune, "Crystal Blue Persuasion," which just missed the top of the charts, and the Top 40 hit "Do Something To Me." It's hard to believe that the elegant, eclectic pop recordings of this album were made by the same people who turned in the rockers "I Think We're Alone Now" and "Mony Mony." But James And The Shondells were pop professionals ready and willing to follow the Sgt. Pepper trend into experimentation, as long as it panned out commercially. Even the most dedicated hack gets lucky, however, and Tommy James was lucky more often than most. "Crimson & Clover" and "Crystal Blue Persuasion" retain a campy appeal ages after the '60s, and if the filler on the album is even sillier now than it was then ("Hello, banana, I am a tangerine," indeed!), it's no less fun. (Originally released in 1968 as Roulette 42023, Crimson & Clover was reissued in 1981 as Roulette 59028.)

I am a huge music fan & this is one of the best albums I've ever heard! I started listening to my father's album when I was probably 5 years old, mesmerized by the orange roulette label! Only to re-dicover this great album when I was a teen with the help of technology I was able to listen to it high on a mountain top in massachusetts in a 78 blazer! it makes for incredible memories! I also remember my father telling me how when he was in Alaska in 1969 writing love letters to the Woman he was to marry in august of that year listening to Crystal Blue Persuasion means a lot to me, they will be celbrating their 40th anniversary this Aug. 23 & Crystal Blue Persuasion will be playing! Thank You Tommy James & the Shondells!

Crimson and Clover is without a doubt the single worst song ever composed. I am not even joking about this. It depresses me that the people who wrote and performed this song are allowed to continue producing music.

Great album

Who cares if Cellophane Symphony isn't here? It's on the iTunes store. Anyway, Crystal Blue Persuasion is my favorite (along with other people) and Crimson and Clover is a well known classic, (duh) but I would also check out I'm a Tangerine, (if you like psychedelic) Smokey Roads, and Sugar On Sunday.

Tommy James & the Shondells — the very mention of their name, even to someone who doesn't really know their music, evokes images of dances and the kind of fun that rock & roll represented before it redefined itself on more serious terms. And between 1966 and 1969, the group enjoyed 14 Top...
