Album Review

Static X's sixth album, Cult of Static, finds the nu-metal veterans steadfastly refusing to change their stripes, and why should they? As they say in the album's title, Static X have a cult that enjoys their adherence to all things that were nu in the '90s: riffs that grind instead of groove, merciless mechanical rhythms, vague drowning synths, all dressed with barking Cookie Monster vocals. Static X don't develop their music as much as they hone it, concentrating on its barest essentials, then delivering it with precision and little flair. This leaves little room to lure new listeners, but that's not the point of this sixth album — it's to serve the needs of the Cult, and it does just that. [Cult of Static was also released in a clean version, with explicit content removed.]

Hmmm...

This is actually probably 4.5 stars. At first I was kind of surprised that this had gotten so many poor reviews, and was still holding onto the hope that the album was actually good. I gotta' say, something is different here, but it's still a really good album. Wayne's vocals are the same throughout the whole album yeah, and maybe that's monotonous for some people, but in small doses the album is great. I only listened to the samples so maybe there's something I'm not hearing, but I'll be picking this up later. The vocals sound like Cannibal's, with a Wayne's gritty voice, and from start to finish the production is so well down that everything gets close to sounding too... sterile and/or clean. So what if a band moves in a new direction, you can't expect everyone to keep pumping out the same material that made them big. This is a good album, but like most of Static-X's stuff, or bands like August Burns Red, Lamb Of God, or Nine Inch Nails for that matter: their music is best listened to when your in the mood, and in small doses. Otherwise one song can start to bleed into another... actually this happens for other bands too, but these are the ones that come to mind. (Please don't criticize these bands, I'm just trying to make a point... Try and keep the focus on the album haha).

Not bad for trying something new.

Most Static-X fans have probably noticed that cult of Static is... a little different. Fans of Cannibal will likely enjoy it, but fans of Shdow Zone won't find too much that they can get into. The band was trying to go to a more thrash metal style while keepig the "evil disco" aspect of their music, which i believe they've accomplished. Z28, Terminal, and Tera-Feid are definately a change among the band's music, but not necessarily an unwelcome one. Lunatic, Stingwray, and Hypure are an example of the thrash sound they wanted to acheive. the album finishes well with Grind 2 Halt, a more ambeint, slighty disturbing atmosphere. To sum it up, this album is a attempt by Stat-c-X to try something a litte different. Although the album itself is good, it's different from most of their old stuff, which will probably turn some fans away. Especially those like me who enjoyed Shadow Zone and maybe even Machine the most.

Very disappointing...

I own all of SX's releases but this is one I won't buy. I love to support the band but I will do it in other ways. I cannot glean an ounce of the creativity that was put into every one of their previous releases out of this one. All the tracks are cookie-cutter and Wayne's voice never changes pitch. Like one of the other posters here I agree that the album is boring from start to end. Let's get back to Shadow Zone- or even Start a War-level creativity guys. Maybe this one was just to appease the record company...

Static-X's roots trace to the Midwest, where vocalist/guitarist Wayne Static grew up in Michigan and drummer Ken Jay in Illinois. They ended up in Chicago separately and met at the record store where Jay worked, introduced to one another by Smashing Pumpkins vocalist Billy Corgan. Static and Jay decided to head west to California and start up a new band.
