iTunes Review
In early 2010 Cults (the duo of guitarist Brian Oblivion and singer Madeline Follin) posted a single called “Go Outside” that enjoyed some well-deserved buzz. Featuring twinkling glockenspiel, a pulsating beat, layers of echo, and a terminally infectious chorus it’s a catchy and clever tune. And it’s surrounded by enough good material to prove that Cults is no one-hit wonder. The band’s appeal lies with their straightforward approach: basic drum beats, shimmering guitars, and well-placed synths and trippy samples that wrap around Follin’s sunny, sing-along vocals. Her sweet and innocent voice is in contrast to the often snide lyrics that she delivers with the kind of seductive melodrama associated with Motown girl groups and female-fronted Phil Spector creations such as the Ronettes. The other standouts, namely “Abducted,” “Most Wanted,” “Oh My God,” and “Never Heal Myself,” are bouncy and textured and coated in a gauzy sheen that injects just the right amount of mystery to the album. Overall an enjoyable debut that manages to be intriguing while delivering the ear candy.
Customer Reviews
Worth the wait!
These songs are short enough to keep my full attention, but have enough elements within to keep my ears sonically satisfied. Only thing I can really complain about is that re album is so short. It leaves me wanting more! Well worth 7.99!
This Album Has Abducted My Ears
Honestly, it has. It makes me want to really want to go outside and listen to this song all summer. It will be one of the most wanted albums of the year. It makes me say to myself, "Oh My God." Truly, there are no bad things in this album; I want it to rave on, and on, and on.
Best Band You Have Never Heard Of
As I pen this, I am on my fifth strait listen through the album. The verdict: sublime.
Cults have definitely lived up to the hype (and rewarded the long wait) after releasing the amazing single “Go Outside”. 1950s Grooves with a modern lo-fi twist and an impressive amount of sound for a two-person band. This is summer music at its finest. Spend the best eight dollars you will spend in 2011 and be swept away by the siren’s voice. Make sure to check out “Abducted”, “Oh My God”, and “Bumper”. Now go forth and spread the word...
