“Hell no!” one fan shouts repeatedly when it becomes clear that Curtis/Live! has reached its end. Who could blame him? Recorded at New York’s Bitter End in 1971 as Curtis Mayfield rode high with his first solo album, Curtis, the set is a classic of in-concert soul-music recording and a signal of the turning tide in R&B. Marked throughout by strong group interplay, with Mayfield’s lilting guitar and new, small band making spicy funk of his recent material and a handful of Impressions classics. “We’re a Winner,” with added lyrics (“No more tears do we cry/The black boy done dried his eye”), serves as a bridge to the likes of “(Don’t Worry) If There’s a Hell Below We’re All Going to Go” and “We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue.” The appreciation between performer and crowd is measurable.

Top 25 Album of all time
Somebody needed to give this album the review it deserves ! First of all this album was a very important contibution to the era in which it was created ...Curtis really had his finger on the pulse of America and the state of affairs in racial relations and communicated this with grace and power. That being said this was a superbly recorded live album with a dynamite ensembel along with Mayfields slick guitar playing and soulful voice. As I said probably one of the top 25 albums of all time and maybe top 10 live albums. Gotta give bigups to itunes for bring this one out.
great but LIVE Superfly isn't on there!
Superfly is on here but dont be fooled! Even though the demo is a live performance, the downloaded track that you will recieve is the studio of Superfly! Somebody do something about this!!
OIF and Curtis
Just wanted to say listening to Curtis while in Iraq was a mind saver! This album is a must have for any true fan of the funk and the truth.
