Album Review

Cyberpunk, Idol's attempt to restyle himself as a futuristic cyber-rocker, only works when he falls back on his effortlessly catchy guitar hooks and melodies of his past hits (the first single, "Shock to the System," for instance). Unfortunately, most of the album is padded with pretentious speeches, sampled dialog, and underdeveloped songs. Especially noteworthy is his techno-dance interpretation of the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" (featuring a repeated Patti Smith quote), which is one of the worst covers ever recorded.

Truly Great (but underrated)

This album is not representative of Billy Idol's other works but it stands on it own merit. It is a truly great album full of dynamic and unexpected sounds. The spoken words/intros are a bit distracting but they do help form a cohesive transition to the album as a whole. If you're expecting Rebel Yell you'll be disappointed but open your mind, let yourself sink into the groove and move... wind down, and relax.

Underrated and mislabeled!

Don't take the album's description at face value, please, this is actually a seriously underrated album! It's not the sound Billy Idol is famous for, sure, but that's no reason to trash it. Some tracks are amazing, like "Neuromancer" . . . which, unfortunately, has been mislabeled here as "Tomorrow People." Also please note that the "Untitled" tracks really do have titles, they're just not listed here. I am actually not sure how many other tracks are mislabeled, so please -- give this album a go, but buy it as a hard copy so you actually know which songs are which.

Musical discovery

When I first played this album I was expecting "Rebel yell", "Eyes without a Face" or something along those lines, I didn't even play it all the way through, But I left in the disc changer out of laziness. One night I was relaxing at home doing some preliminary design sketches and the album came on, I didnt recognize who or what it was, I was occupied but I was almost immediatly immersed in the flow and it opened up my mind, an album which told stories from a futuristic world that ebbs and flows within the music. Had Billy done a duet with David Bowie (someone who can change by leaps from one ablum to another) this would have been a commercial success but for the man who performed my high school anthem "Money, Money" to do something this sophisticated was unexpected, but remains even ten years later one of my staples when being creative.
