Album Review
"Da Da Da" isn't much of a song, but that doesn't mean that it isn't catchy. It's not much more than a simple, campy synthesizer and voice riff, but its irreverent humor and silly beat sticks in your head. Which, of course, is the reason why Volkswagen used the song in its 1997 advertising campaign, and it is also the reason why the song became an unexpected hit that year, 15 years after "Da Da Da" was originally released. To cash in on its success, the Da Da Da compilation was assembled. Featuring highlights from the German group's two albums, Trio & Error and Bye Bye, Da Da Da is filled with similarly catchy Eurotrash, and while nothing else is quite as memorable as the title track, it's still good fun, especially for obsessive New Wave collectors.

Shame this doesn't have all the "hits"
This is really a "best of" kind of album, but these songs aren't the best. As has been noted, this was put together to cash in on the Volskwagen commercial. Obviously, they didn't want to scare off the Volkswagen-influenced latecomers, so the songs that have been picked aren't the hardcore-Casio ones that are the truly brilliant songs from Trio's first album. I used to listen to that LP over and over again in the art studio of my high school, must have been around 1987, kids. One day in the mid-90s -- I must have been moving -- I either sold the record or gave it away: I didn't have anything to play it on anymore. What a mistake. It had songs like "Sabine Sabine Sabine" on it, missing here. I just now went to Amazon and ordered a deluxe, 2-CD import that promises to have the whole shebang. Far too expensive, but Sabine will be mine again, at last. For that, it's worth it.
Doesn't even get it half right . . .
This is a horrible collection. U.S. label decides to rerelease songs from a band whose albums should have never been let go out of print, and they decide all you fahvregnugen (sp?) folks just weren't smart enough to handle early eighties new german minimalism. So what we in the U.S. get is a dumbed down collection of a band's music. T train's review implores you to order the double CD import. I agree. but those casio songs T talks about aren't from the first album, they are from the second album. Missing here is "Sabine, Sabine, Sabine", a slew of others, BUT the biggest omission by far is "Broken Hearts For You and Me". The reason this song never went to #1 in the U.S. is a mystery to me. I also encourage you to do some dvd sniffing. i found a copy of trio doing a 90 minute concert in cologne in 1982. After 22 years of being a fan of this band (their music stays great) the performance exceeded all my dreamy expectations. Burning Hot. These guys never got their due stateside.
A fun trip down memory lane
Everyone knows the one song - Da Da Da. And it is a bit of greatness, a minimalist masterpiece, uh-huh. But dig deeper. Boom boom is a true gem (always brings me back to high school), and Ich Lieb Den Rock & Roll and Anna Letmeinletmeout are lots of fun. Don't get me wrong - a little goes a long way, and they can get treacly - see Hearts are Trump for proof. Still, this is a solid choice for your valuable Itunes cabbage.
