Album Review

Following the bleak But Seriously and Both Sides, Phil Collins delivered the considerably lighter Dance into the Light, his first upbeat pop album since 1985's No Jacket Required. Not only was it a return to the musical style that brought him to the top of the charts during the '80s, but Dance into the Light was the first record Collins released since leaving Genesis, which made it all the more crucial to his career. For the most part, the album treads familiar territory — R&B-influenced dance-pop, sensitive ballads, and brooding midtempo ruminations — but there are several occasions where he stretches out, incorporating worldbeat influences into his style.

Phil Collins Light

This is album did not exactly grab my attention at first, however, upon a second try, and nearly exhausting the rest of the iTunes Phil Collins collection, I find this lighter bit of Phil amusing and download worthy. "Wear My Hat," "Take Me Down," "Dance Into the Light," and "River So Wide" are definite stand outs. The first of these two have a delightfully upbeat Paul Simon likeness to them. Despite being a far cry from the emotional intensity of his first few solo albums, there is sure to be something on here for any Phil fan in need of a tiny break from the heavy brooding we've all come to know and love.

Upbeat, but lacks fire

While DITL is definately a much more upbeat and happier album than Both Sides, it lacks the fire and the power that Both Sides and But Seriously did. For one thing, it sounds rather dated. The big brass sound was basically out by the late 90s and the album as whole is rather bland. There are a few exceptions- these being the worldbeat tunes of the title track, Lorenzo and River So Wide. The rest of the album sounds like a typical adult-contemporary record by an artist confined to the trappings of his past. Phil could have stretched out a bit more on this record, perhaps using a more up-to-date or 'timeless' sound as he did with Both Sides. This record sounds more like a mid 80s record than late 90s. Thank God Phil's next studio album, Testify, was a better and more up-to-date one. DITL is still worth the buy though, if you're into Phil's music.

Awesome!

I love this album. It is a new and refreshing side of Phil Collins. All songs are well performed and Phil voice is great. Highly recommended album.

Phil Collins' ascent to the status of one of the most successful pop and adult contemporary singers of the '80s and beyond was probably as much of a surprise to him as it was to many others. Balding and diminutive, Collins was almost 30 years old when his first solo single, "In the Air Tonight," became a number two hit in his native U.K. (the...
