Album Review

On their 1999 album Dance The Devil, Dublin's Frames craft more of the passionate rock that has made them popular in their homeland. Songs like "Pavement Tune" are catchy and focused, making this collection their best to date.

wow...

How The Frames have managed to make such amazing music for so long and not be HUGE is beyond me. This album is incredible start to finish. Emotional lyrics, explosive builds within songs, Glen Hansard's incredible vocals that can range from a delicate whisper to a powerful yell, and the beautifully complex arrangements. This album is a nice mix of upbeat and mellow songs. "Star Star" is so beautiful... it's the type of song that I would put on the soundtrack to my life (if that makes an ounce of sense...). The lyrics, vocals, and instrumentation are all superb. "God Bless Mom" is my favorite of the upbeat songs. It is quirky in more ways than one. Perhaps my favorite part of it is the soaring vocal/synth buildup during the chorus. (A more traditional and easier to understand version of the song, get it off the album "The Roads Outgrown") "Dance the Devil Back into His Hole" is a great way to end a fantastic album. If you aren't familiar with The Frames, please do yourself a favor and aquaint yourself with the best band you never knew about.

Good example of their earlier work

This is a good example of The Frames earlier work. When beginning to listen to a band that's been around for several years, it's a good idea to start with their earlier work for two reasons: because it was obviously deemed worthy of a follow-up album; and to see how they've progressed over the years towards their newer work. Enjoy...

Maybe the best Frames album

Dance the Devil is probably the most consistent effort from the Frames. There is not a weak spot on the ablum. Put this album on repeat and just let it play! The more rocking songs on this album (Perfect Opening Line, Pavement Tune, The Stars Are Underground, God Bless Mom) are well crafted and you will find your toes tapping before you know it. The ablum also has a fair share of mellow gems like Seven Day Mile, Plateau (brilliant song), Star Star, and Neath the Beeches. If you don't know the Frames or are looking for a lighter dose than their latest effort, Burn the Maps (brilliant in other ways), then this album will more than do the trick.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s

The Frames are led by Glen Hansard, a Dublin-based singer/songwriter who quit school at age 13 to begin busking on local streets. By 17, he'd borrowed enough money from his parents to record a demo, 50 copies of which were pressed and distributed to family and friends. One of those copies made its way to Island Records' Denny Cordell, who successfully lobbied label founder Chris Blackwell to sign Hansard to the roster. Now signed to a major label, Hansard founded the Frames, taking the name from...
