Album Review

Leslie Phillips is better known as singer/songwriter Sam Phillips; Dancing with Danger is one of her early releases, made before she took on her nickname and crossed over into secular music. While the focus of the album is on dance music, Phillips' pop smarts are already evident, and her songwriting is unconventionial (especially for Christian music), centering thoughtfully on crises of faith and the spirit instead of falling prey to homilies and platitudes.

Glad to see this on iTunes!

I remember as everyone else when this album came out. I do see that iTunes says that it came out in 1987, but it actually came out in 1984. I bought this on cassette and still have the origional cassette. It is much different than her earlier music and it is much different than her new music that has been released on nonesuch records. I would recommend this if you remember her touring at summer festivals with Amy Grant, Michael W Smith, Tonio K, and David Meece. Some good music, but I still think that "The Turing" is her best album to date, concept and performance wise.

Danger Danger Will Robinson......

Leslie Phillips (now Sam Phillips on Virgin Records) came out with her sophomore record back in 1984 with Dancing With Danger. Again, the lyrics were outstanding and riveting on most of the songs. The music however, was lackluster. The best songs on this one, by far, were "Strength Of My Life" and "By My Spirit". Her vocals could shatter glass and your eardrums at times on this album, but the strength of this album were in her ballads where her vocals soar.

Talk about another life!

I remember when this album came out. Leslie, now Sam, was on tour with Randy Stonehill. With "Dancing with Danger" no question it was dangerous. Leslie was very energetic. Her vocals were way up in her range which is a bit piercing. After this album it was a great change to hear her in her lower range. I'm thankful that she didn't give up on music altogether. The best song on the album I think is "By My Spirit". That still has legs today. "Here he comes" sounds like a record company throw in/throw up.
