iTunes Review

An underground rock legend for decades, Daniel Johnston has proven himself a songwriter of exceptional wit and craft many times over. Daniel Johnston's Electric Ghosts finds him teamed up with tour manager/producer Jack Medicine (Don Goede) on an appealing batch of nervous pop/rock ditties. The mood here has a distinct late-‘60s vibe to it, emphasized by bubblegum-like melodies and folk-rock arrangements. Chunky acoustic guitars and quaint keyboard sounds enliven tracks like “Goodbye to That Girl” and “Pain In My Heart.” Screaming electric guitar and a trudging tempo turn “Blue Skies Will Haunt You From Now On” into a psychedelic fright-fest. At times — on “Sweetheart (Frito Lay)” and “Summer Jazz,” for instance — the pervasive unease is colored with a faux-sunny glow. Things grow more intense during a panic-stricken cover of David Bowie’s “Scary Monsters,” a song seemingly custom-written for Johnston. Delightful if disturbing, Daniel Johnston's Electric Ghosts adds another blossom to Daniel’s bouquet of weird brilliance.

Quirky But Cool

Blues Skies Will Haunt You From Now On will surely haunt you from now on. It's very creepy but very cool. The Daniel Johnston tunes are upbeat and funny and as always a little bit sad but I think that's what we love about Johnston. Jack Medicine's tunes aren't half bad and make for a nice break from Danny's quirky tunage.

Will haunt you forever baby
