iTunes Review

How the Gods Kill found the mainstream rock world catching up to the blues-metal innovations of Danzig and producer Rick Rubin. Metallica’s 1991 blockbuster Black Album borrowed a lot from Danzig’s blueprint and became one of the biggest selling rock albums of the Nineties. In addition, younger Danzig disciples like Alice In Chains and White Zombie were beginning to garner mainstream radio plays. Danzig responded with How the Gods Kill, a less claustrophobic effort than the two albums that preceded it, but one increasingly attuned to the new trends in metal. While “Anything” and “How the Gods Kill” deliver on the public’s newfound taste for darker-than-dark ballads, other songs make explicit reference to rock’n’roll’s past. “Bodies” is based on the infamously lumbering riff from Led Zeppelin’s “How Many More Times” (itself derived from Howlin’ Wolf), while “Dirty Black Summer” recalls the doom laden intro to AC/DC’s “Hell’s Bells.” Black Sabbath looms particularly large over How the Gods Kill, especially on “Godless” and “Heart of the Devil.” Even though the album contains some of Danzig’s most accessible moments as a solo artist he refuses to sacrifice his inner muse, as evidenced by the baroque nightmare “Sistinas.”

Great Album!

Just as great as the last, and it just gets better and better! "Godless" starts this album with a roar of the drums and screaming guitar. and it doesnt stop. "Anything" is a soothing track at first and turns into such a powerful song. "Bodies" is a great blues song, with a great guitar lick and big drums. "How The Gods Kill" such a kick the face song that has you chanting along with the intro and outro. "Dirty Black Summer" a groovin song that will get you movin for sure. "Left Hand Black" a shout to god, and its heard, and satans singing it. "Heart of the devil" need i say more, catchy, catchy little tune. "Sistinas" this song is the softer side of Glenn never really knew there was one did you. It is a great song that has you singing along. "Do you wear the mark" a song that brings you right back home to hell on earth. "When the dying calls" another good old style blues riff that ends this master piece of an album. If your interested in this album or even just one song pick it up. And Enjoy!!!

One of the best rock albums of all time

I've had to buy this album a half a dozen times from it getting worn out and scratched up. If your just getting into Danzig, this is the best. 1 and 2 are great, but this is leaps and bounds ahead. Danzig, Christ, Biscuits, Eerie Von, Rick Rubin . . . . Hell, you can't beat this.

Great album, Possibly My Favourite By Them

I need not say more. But the album cover is upside down.

Biography

Formed: 1987 in Lodi, NJ

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

During his time in the seminal hardcore band the Misfits, vocalist Glenn Danzig displayed a fascination with outlandish, graphic, often gory imagery; in forming the more heavy metal-oriented band Samhain, Danzig's lyrics delved into typical metal subject matter, but took the concept of darkness to an extreme. After the demise of Samhain, Danzig formed his own eponymous band with Samhain guitarist John Christ, ex-Rosemary's Babies drummer Eerie Von on bass, and longtime hardcore drummer Chuck Biscuits...
