Album Review
Borrowing a phrase from This Is Spinal Tap, the sonic evolution of Southern California stoners Fu Manchu throughout the '90s can't even be charted. In fact, in dinosaur terms, 1995's Daredevil finds them sun-bathing on the beach of a primordial ocean, still wondering whether leaving the water was such a good idea in the first place. Before this review gets too weird, let it be said that this album was certainly their most focused effort to date, thanks to the infectious classic-rock riffs of tracks like "Travel Agent" (excellent groove) and "Coyote Duster" (great guitar solo). Unfortunately, the remaining songs tend to be indistinctive and repetitive — no thanks to their inexplicable titles and nonexistent choruses. But, not all albums are about hit singles, and as a whole Daredevil provides a great background noise for, well, getting stoned.
Customer Reviews
The record where Fu Manchu became Fu Manchu.
Some bands sit down and discuss what kind of rock band they want to be. Others just are what they are; no discussions needed. Fu Manchu is one of those bands. Listening to "Daredevil," it seems to come so easy for the band. Super laid-back, yet hugely fuzzy and heavy. It's the sort of thing bands either have or they don't.
It's got all the elements the band is noted for: fuzzed out guitars, 70s stomp, and California vibes. While some may argue later releases are more classic, I'll argue this is the most creative record they've made.
I'll spare y'all the track by track details as I find long-winded reviews tiring, but if you like heavy music, but not heavy metal, this is your answer. Laid back, fuzzy, cowbell clanging, goodness.
Plenty of cow-bell and sludge
Daredevil was actually first released as an LP/CD in 1995 on Bong Load Custom Records. Plenty of cow-bell and sludgy layered guitars to go around.
