iTunes Review

Dark Is the Way, Light Is a Place shows Anberlin's ability to rage against the world while forging tracks that are both melodically enticing and instrumentally potent. The band’s spiritual underpinnings are given in terse, biting language and driven home by Stephen Christian’s anguished-to-exalted lead vocals. Dark Is the Way… explores the peaks and chasms of love, capturing a boundless sense of desire in “Impossible” and nursing wounds of betrayal in “To the Wolves.” “We Owe This to Ourselves” reasserts Anberlin’s aggressive side with rifle-shot guitar bursts and a ZZ Top-like beat. The band’s sweeter songs — particularly the yearning “You Belong Here” and the acoustic-centered “Down” — don’t lose their edge even as they celebrate the possibility of happiness. Most of all, these songs are concerned with truth and self-liberation, a theme most passionately expressed in the album’s closing tune, “Depraved.” Producer Brendan O’Brien helps Anberlin achieve a widescreen sound with cleanly slicing guitar lines and luminous vocal harmonies.

EMOTIONALLY CHARGED

this record shows just how deep the thoughts of Stephen Christian can go. the words are pure genious. Think of the slower songs on Cities, and the faster songs on New Surrender. thats how i feel this record has shaped itself to be. im super hooked on "Impossible". it makes me wana drive around at 2am with the windows down. its a good-feeling song. Theyve definately changed their style...theyre not so poppy anymore. But in this case..change is good. absolutely love this record. stoked for the headlining tour with Civil Twilight!!

Great

Compared to their other albums… I can’t really say where this would place. Most would agree Cities was Anberlin at their best, and I can’t argue that this album is any better, but it’s not a step back. The musicianship and songwriting is stunning. Those discouraged by the New Surrender will be glad to rediscover the Anberlin they love, while those who never left will remain loyal. A very relatable album, the only really complaint I have is how short it is, with only 10 songs, the album is over way to quickly.
As heavy with stunning rifts and beating drums as this album is, the music screams out to you in more than just the sum of music that makes up the album. The album as a whole is very aggressive and that leaves the title “Dark is the Way…” fitting. This is a gripping album that challenges and invokes varied emotions. Anberlin’s music is still doing its job.

Take a moment to listen...

You owe this to yourself ;)

Biography

Formed: 2002 in Winter Haven, FL

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Hailing from Orlando, Florida, Anberlin formed from the ashes of various other area projects. Led by the soaring vocals of Stephen Christian, the positive-thinking Anberlin also included Joseph Milligan (guitar), Nathan Young (drums), Joey Bruce (guitar), and Deon Rexroat (bass), and presented an alternative pop/rock sound that, while inflected with the earnestness of emo, was closer to the mature stylings of Third Eye Blind. A five-song demo garnered Anberlin the attention of Seattle-based indie...
