Album Review

There are many death metal bands that like to call themselves melodic when, in fact, melody is merely an afterthought for them; at the end of the day, such bands are much more interested in bombast than they are in melody. But melody has never been a mere afterthought for Scar Symmetry; it's an integral part of what they do. And the combination of melody and forceful aggression that served them so well in the past continues to serve them well on Dark Matter Dimensions. Many of Scar Symmetry's fans were concerned about their future when, in 2008, former lead singer Christian Älvestam announced that he was leaving, but this 2009 release finds the Swedish outfit bouncing back nicely. With Dark Matter Dimensions, Scar Symmetry unveil two new lead singers: Roberth Karlsson and Lars Palmqvist. Älvestam took care of both the extreme and clean lead vocals on the band's pre-2009 recordings, but on Dark Matter Dimensions, Scar Symmetry assign Karlsson the Cookie Monster growling and put Palmqvist in charge of the clean lead vocals. Karlsson and Palmqvist both rise to the occasion on an album that does a fine job of balancing intensity and musicality; as bombastic as parts of this 47-minute CD can be, there is never any doubt that melody, nuance, and intricacy are high priorities for Scar Symmetry. Old-school power metal and progressive metal aren't minor influences on Dark Matter Dimensions — they are prominent influences — and it is obvious that these Swedes value craftsmanship as much as they value balls-to-the-wall intensity. This excellent album leaves no doubt that there is life after Älvestam for Scar Symmetry., Rovi

Didn't like it at first, but warmed up to it

In my opinion, this is a clear step back from Holographic Universe. Holographic was showing signs of great maturation, and progress in Scar Symmetry, and Dark matter dimensions doesn't carry on in that tradition. There is no progression on tis record. It seems like they are playing it safe and doing what they know they can do/have done before. It's not a bad record by any means, it's just got a feeling of familiarity about it that is pretty underwhelming considering there last record. The growls are great, the clean vocals are good at points, but they lack emotion. Hopefully they can branch out a bit, and give the vocalists a little more room to play around and not try to immitate Christian on the next record. Although it was a bit of a letdown, it's still enjoyable, and I'm anxious to see where they go on the next one.

I was surprised

I was very skeptical when I had heard that Christian left and they got 2 new vocalists to take over. I've been listening to this CD on their myspace and I bought it yesterday when it was released, and I am so impressed with how they sounded with the new guys. I don't think they can top Holographic Universe, but this is definitely worth buying and listening to.

Better than Holographic Universe!

Christian did do a Phenomenal job on the last 3 Albums of SS, but these two new Vocalists Lars Palmqvist, and Roberth Karlsson are like two Christian Älvestams on Steroids! Henrik Ohlssons Drumming has totally improved rapidly since the previous release, and the Guitarists have a more Morbid Angel like tune on the Song Nonhuman Era. This Entire Album Symbolizes on how Much these guy's Matured, and that they can take on anything that tries to take these 6 fellows down. I suggest you should really buy this Album fresh from your local CD Store, but Itunes is another Alternate. Oh what the Heck.
