iTunes Review

A year of legal arguments delayed the release of this album and in the interim both Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous and vocal guest Vic Chesnutt committed suicide. The title takes on a greater and darker meaning, not that this was ever an easy collection. Film director David Lynch contributed two vocal tracks and the rest of the cast is an elite line-up of musical personalities who bring much of themselves to the tracks. Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and Linkous constructed haunted houses for their guests to explore. The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne turns in his spacey vocal take for “Revenge.” Grandaddy’s Jason Lytle offers his weightless meditation on “Everytime I’m With You.” Iggy Pop turns up the punk bravado for “Pain.” Linkous and the Cardigans’ Nina Persson bring forth a joyous pop atmosphere for “Daddy’s Gone” that gently hides the real terror. Suzanne Vega proves her great flexibility with the comfortably modern “The Man Who Played God.” But it’s Chesnutt who brings the album’s most chilling moment with “Grim Augury,” where his wracked voice dredges up all the pain he carried in life.

Great album: buy it elsewhere

Because of the number of collaborators on this album, each song is very different. I like most of them. Very emotional music. If you go to another very popular place to buy music online, you will find this album cheaper and with bonus tracks.

Excellent Album from beginning to end

Spend a few extra bucks on the deluxe edition! I got the physical book w/ a blank cd before emi would let us buy the music. David Lynch contributed more than just his voice to this, get the pictures, too.

Why We Love Indie Rock

If you told me there was an compilation album that featured Wayne Coyne, Julian Casablancas, James Mercer, Mark Linkous, and more great artists, AND it was fantastic, I would be heaven. When I listen to Dark Night of the Soul, I am. Usually compilation albums fall flat for me, but this one blew me away.
The Flaming Lips' "Revenge" is a beautiful song. In my opinion, it's one of their best.
Julian Casablancas' "LIttle Girl" is also great. The bubbly guitar strumming combined with Julian's impeccable vocals drew me in.
James Mercer's "Insane Lullaby", with it's purposefully murky production and distorted bells, is another hit. Mercer's expertly crafted vocal melody carries this song.
The last stand-out for me was "Daddy's Gone", by the late Mark Linkous. Linkous' use of vocal harmony and bright, sweet chords is amazing.

Brian Burton, the man better known as artist/producer Danger Mouse, was born to a schoolteacher father and a social worker mother in White Plains, NY, but spent much of his childhood upstate in Spring Valley. When he was 13, his family moved to Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta, where he was introduced to the hip-hop sounds of the South and Midwest.
