Dark night for music

A lot of attention has been drawn to this album by Mark Linkous'/Sparklehorse's death. Let's keep in mind that this album has long been wrapped and EMI has battled Danger Mouse, preventing the release of this CD for quite some time. The battles have been well chronicled. Now that Sparklehorse is dead, the album has been released. Any tie-in to his death is merely coincidence.

Now, the music itself is top notch. Pain seems to be a major theme, since the album actually opens with the word pain... "Pain/It's really a matter of sensation..." Most songs feature the word, and Iggy Pop's track is even called "Pain". Nightmare images also play into the album, such as in "Grim Augury" As a whole, it is an excellent cross-section of Rock music.

Favorite track: "Little Girl"

a goodbye note from Mark

Maybe I'm wrong, but this album feels like a farewell from the guy who's brought us through so many sad and wonderful moments up to this point. A true musical genius who did everything on his own terms, and never came up short. It's a testament to his pure artistry that so many talented and hugely famous musicians want to collaborate with him on this record. I wish more than anything that he could still be with us to celebrate this beautiful record, and to know for himself what a rare treasure he is.

A Lovely Collection of Classic Sounds

This album amazes me. How is it that each song reminds me of what my father would like to play on his car stereo driving through erans on a summer day. Each songs fills a different era or genre in my music memory. A great piece, a collection of the past music many want to have return to them just for a moment in time. Each of these seem to be part of our favorite songs from past decades. Though this is new, it feels like a classic album. Way to go!

Brian Burton, the man better known as artist/producer Danger Mouse, was born to a schoolteacher father and a social worker mother in White Plains, NY, but spent much of his childhood upstate in Spring Valley. When he was 13, his family moved to Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta, where he was introduced to the hip-hop sounds of the South and Midwest. Though Burton had always wanted to be a cartoonist while growing up, the opportunity to attend college on a full scholarship appealed to the 18-year-old,...
