the owls are not what they seem

Last year, Trophy Scars fans were gifted with the monolith/masterpiece "Bad Luck". This year, Trophy Scars fans are gifted with the evolution of the band to another level.

"Darkness.." is a very straightforward album with dirty growly vocals to a faint whisper - Scary Jerry to Quiet Jerry. Guitars are toned down and the percussion is brought to the front, illuminating the tight rhythm section that drives this EP. Along with several Twin Peaks samples that this guy (as in me) was glad to hear.

In hindsight, it's a very sad album. However, that was more or less the bands' goal. And they achieved that goal.

The album start quite energetic (after the opening track, that is) with 'Nausea's fist-pumping intro and scratchy vocals, however, the bluesy piano in the background can foreshadow what is to come. However, as the album comes to a close, we see Trophy Scars inching into this epic range. 'Sad Stanley' is nothing short of a masterpiece with excellent build and, at about the halfway point, practically becomes a new song. 'Time in heaven...' ends on a hauntingly sad note, perfectly tying in with the album's theme. Which is something we've come to expect out of The Scars: they're becoming an album band who, in my eyes, can really do no wrong.

You'd have to try and not like at least a few of these tracks. Well worth the price, however, the album artwork (like Bad Luck) is phenomenal and gives much reason to buy the hard copy.

Thank you Trophy Scars

Another fine piece of work from TS.

I always anticipate new work from Trophy Scars, and this like many albums before it didn't fail to please. Man, and I thought 'Bad Luck' was incredible.

Formed: 2001 in Morristown, NJ

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

With their prominent use of piano, progressive rock guitar solos, and occasional feints towards hip-hop and funk rhythms, post-hardcore act the Trophy Scars have a wider range of influences and musical shadings than many similar bands, at times sounding like the '80s art rock U.K. group Talk Talk given an emo makeover. Similarly, singer Jerry Jones evinces a subtle, sardonic sense of...
