iTunes Review

Nothing says “cool parent” like having 1978 David Bowie read Sergei Prokofiev’s classic 1936 fable Peter and the Wolf to your children. Even though Bowie’s spoken-word parts come in at just under 30 minutes, his animated delivery and articulate performance of this wonderful musical narrative is nothing short of perfect—especially in the beginning, when he explains to his young listeners how each musical instrument correlates to the story’s seven characters. It’s also difficult to imagine a better accompaniment than that of Eugene Ormandy conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra (most notably the string section’s lilting and whimsical approximation of the story’s protagonist Peter and the French horns’ foreboding tones that represent the wolf). Bowie’s elegant inflections are an excellent companion to the rich tones, playful notes, and darkened moods. The story is followed by two bonus discs’ worth of material; first The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (which strips it down in sections) and then The Nutcracker Suite.

Customer Reviews

Heard this as a child... now I'm buying it for my kids.

My dad played this for me as a kid. I loved the story and the music. I am now buying it for my kids. BTW a lot of the music was also used in A Christmas Story. Namely the bully got the wolf theme where Ralph was the bird.

Download is a mess

I bought the album. Instead of downloading as one album with 41 tracks, it downloaded each track as a separate album. The tracks are not in order making playing it impossible if one wants to listen to the story. HELP!

The cliché about David Bowie says he's a musical chameleon, adapting himself according to fashion and trends. While such a criticism is too glib, there's no denying that Bowie demonstrated remarkable skill for perceiving musical trends at his peak in the '70s. After spending several years in the late '60s as a mod and as an all-around music-hall entertainer, Bowie reinvented himself as a hippie singer/songwriter. Prior to his breakthrough in 1972, he recorded a proto-metal record and a pop/rock album,...
