A Wonderful Recreation

This is a wonderful recreation of the soundtrack of this beloved movie. My favorite is the opening track, Prelude and Outer Space. The arrangement and conducting of this one piece is simply astounding. I love the timing, which gives the piece a subtly futuristic sound. What amazes me is that the low volume of the horns paradoxically imbues them with great power. The overall spaciousness and clarity of the soundstage makes this a treat to the ears. Several of the other tracks are also noteworthy. But the advantage of iTunes is that I can pick the tracks I really like. The album art is also quite beautiful.

This is NOT the original soundtrack

The original soundtrack was released in 1993 by Fox/Arista/BMG and is out-of-print. This is a new recording of the same music, and it's terrible. Even though the sound quality is vastly superior to the original, the theremins are continuously out-of-tune, and there is unnecessary additional instrumentation. The melancholy that underscores the original soundtrack is missing, too. Find the original soundtrack album if you can. Peace.

I cannot agree that this music (recording and rendition) is terrible. This score was recorded in mono fifty five years ago. This new album features width and depth that the mono version could never give us. Bravo! With the work done, the source being so old and out of date, I can only try to imagine the effort to bring forth this music in such good sound. It's very beautiful and forceful on my surround system. I could never insult it with a low rating. The fact is, I'm grateful. BTW, I was a 10 year old boy when this picture came to our local screen. Nothing would ever been quite the same again. So I go back to the very beginning of TDTESS. If you don't have it and you care about this picture, get the new DVD. It's worth your time and your money.
