Album Review

The fruit of the fourth season of MTV's Making the Band — the Sean "Diddy" Combs-produced series that has defied all odds and started turning out bands and records that actually sell — Day26, like their Danity Kane sisters, seem strangely disconnected from modern music on their 2008 debut, Day26. Boy bands like this quintet aren't quite in vogue in 2008, but Making the Band has always strangely sidestepped fashion in favor of perennial music biz formulas that work, and there is no other pop formula quite as sturdy as assembling a vocal group. Despite all the reality TV trappings of Making the Band — most absurdly how Day26 and Danity Kane were pitted against each other in Making the Band 4 to see which group finished its record first — the show really does follow the old formula to a T, as Diddy drafted plenty of pros to write and craft tracks for the album. Bryan-Michael Cox is the producer responsible for the majority of the tracks — even more if the hidden tracks and Target exclusive bonus are taken into account — but Mario Winans helms two of the more memorable tracks (first single "Got Me Going" and "Co-Star"), with Danja responsible for the sleek "In My Bed" and Malay making an impression with "I'm the Reason" (which nicely echoes Michael Jackson's "Rock with You" and "If It Wasn't for You"). As this is a vocal group album, the emphasis is naturally on the group itself, or at least its vocals, as the members themselves are curiously lacking in charisma for TV stars. Day26 may not have that distinctive of an on-record personality, but they do sound much more at ease than the stiff, labored Danity Kane, which means that they usually just slip into the production (a notable exception being "In My Bed," where their harmonies puncture the mood set by Danja) — which is kind of for the best, because the one way Day26 is modern is in the sense that it often places the sound above the song. So in that way, Day26 are indeed a vocal group for their time: they serve the production as much as the production serves them.

Diddy's new group of stars are destined to be the next big R&B group. Bringing a fresh new sound, members Brian, Big Mike, Q, Robert & Willie come together to form Day26, the day they officially became a group. Here is how their debut faired. I'm The Reason: The jungle rhythmed "I'm The Reason" is a nice start to the album, as the group gives a refreshing and uptempo start. The singing isn't bad and blends quite well with the production. 3/5 Got Me Going: Diddy & Mario Winans produced, the catchy well done claps and drums work nicely on this, as the smooth strings and piano blend nicely. This is definitely a hit, each member sings fittingly and the track is real chill track that stays uptempo and was a real strong choice as the single. 4.5/5 In My Bed: The hi hats fueled and uptempo production really doesn't blend well, as the boys just don't gell with the track. They constantly sing, "in my bed, we'll be rockin", but the track doesn't grasp you and it ends up being a decent track. 2.5/5 Silly Love: With an instantly loveable production, you can tell this is a catchy cut. The twinkling instruments and "naaa,nanana, naaaa" of the horns/boys singing is extremely catchy. That pretty much becomes the catch phrase of the track, but the harmonizing really works nicely on this one. Its a strong track and one of their better cuts. Only complaint is how short it is. 3.5/5 Come With Me: Pounding bass throughout, the track isn't bad. Especially production wise, were the dramatic and high energy "Come With Me" is a sexy seductive number, as Brian's vocals on this are solid. Sadly Willie's vocals wear a little thin on the bridge, but its forgiveable. As strings add some intensity, the hook is decent, fitting and the track is another strong joint. 3.5/5 Co Star: The guys decide to slow things down a bit, after a blast of music to start off the album. The keys are smooth, as a sophisticated drum pattern runs throughout. The singing is decent, could have used a little more emotion or soul, but the track serves its purpose. "I'm in the right place at the right time", the guys sing, as each member gets time to shine. The track is a decent midtempo. 3/5 Come In (My Door's Open): The Runners busy production is a little hectic and can't quite get the blend of production and singing. As the production overpowers the guys singing and there is a slight lack of emotion on the track. The hook isn't that great, the track is decent, but overly busy. 2.5/5 Are We In This Together: Bryan Michael Cox's fluttery keys and pounding drums with claps make for an interesting production. However once again, the drums have way too much bump on them, as the singing is overshadowed by the production. The mixing of both doesn't work as well as it should, its a pity that the vocals are so good on this one too. 3/5 What It Feels Like: Another bass heavy midtempo with claps and synths, the boys sound really dull on this one. It just doesn't connect on the verses, as the hook is decent. The track doesn't have some raw soul, it features some nice notes hit by some members, but doesn't turn out as well as it should. 3/5 Since You've Been Gone: Bryan Michael Cox returns, with a synth midtempo that twinkles with some keys. The second single, the guys blend better with the production and the hook is likeable, making it a catchy hook that fans will like. The verses feature some of that emotion that has lacked in some of the tracks, as the clear and confident vocals hit well. Strong track here. 4/5 If It Wasn't For You: The hook is a nice tune, but only decent, as Robert takes the spotlight on his verse and sounds really good. The production is typical of the previous tracks, a little less filled, but the track isn't bad. 3/5 Don't Fight The Feeling: Bryan Michael Cox delivers yet another clap and bass heavy production, as the boys sing over it. The track is decent, but nothing too special. Its nice to listen to, but isn't memorable beyond several listens. 3/5 Ain't Going: A synth bumper that was also featured on Danity Kane's sophomore album and served as theme song for Making The Band 4 season 2 show. Its the posse cut that is fun and isn't bad. 3.5/5 Exclusive (No Excuses): Bryan Michael Cox continues to show why he is one of the top producers in the game for young singers. The intriguing drum pattern is so good that the simplistic clap rhythm is simply thrown in there, with synth bits between, Cox balances the bump and singing well. This is a banger and features some of the best singing from the guys as well. The hook is very catchy and nicely written as this is ends up being a top track on the album. The ballad would have been nice too, but this club banger works as well. 4.5/5 Day26 is the new generation 112 or urban NSYNC, that will surely have success. The album itself is nonetheless a good effort, nothing spectacular, but they aren't just a regular group. It is another album loaded with uptempo busy productions, similar to Danity Kane's Welcome The Dollhouse, just with some that balance the blend of bump and singing better. "Exclusive" is as many know a great track from Bryan Michael Cox that features some of the best singing from the group, the too short "Silly Love" is catchy and loveable that is breezy, as "Got Me Going" works off its strong and simplistic production. Some tracks though, "Come In" and "In My Bed" in particular are clear examples of production overpowering the singing. I don't understand the approach of good beat over strong singing, after all the tests Diddy puts them through, to see them hide behind the beats. "Since You've Been Gone" seems like a solid single that is nicely crafted and the overall feel of the album is uptempo. Some tracks show their inexperience, as the guys are still searching for their sound, but its a solid debut that will most definitely satisfy Making The Band 4 fans and possibly picking up others along the way. Rating: 7.5 out of 10

Chad Beatz Review: Very good album...this has the contrast of songs that the DK album was missing....DK had too many uptempos in a row...the sound got tired... DAY 26 has a good variety of joints... ONE THING IF YOU PAY ATTENTION TO ALBUMS IS THAT..THE STRONGEST SONGS ARE USUALLY IN THE TOP 5... FYI! STAND OUT TRACKS 1.Silly Love...dope funk/rnb feel.... 2.Co Star (personal fav--def 2nd single--those rhodes chords give u goosebumps at about 4 secs in..tight work to whoever produced that joint-- IT STANDS OUT FROM THE WHOLE ALBUM CAUSE ITS NOT FOLLOWING THE CURRENT "ELECTRONIC" TREND...TIGHT WORK AGAIN ON THE PRODUCTION AND SONGWRITING...) 3.Come With Me...love the timing of the drums 4.Got Me Going: has a hot beat...(shout out to RIO)...but i think the hook (lyrics and/or melody) needed to be stronger..cant really distinguish it from the rest of the song...just my thoughts... ON THE FLIPSIDE: Track number 7 (i didnt know Ciara was on the album...)HMMMM!!!! Track number 8 sounds like number 7. Should have spaced them out on the cd Mr. A&R!! OVERALL,Im impressed with the overall effort put out on this album... DAY 26: THE 2008 VERSION OF NEW EDITION!!! LOVING IT!!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this CD. This group is totally inspirational just due to the fact that they fought soi hard to be in this group and it shows through their amazing talent. I myself am I fan of Making the Band and I am so proud of where they have got to. Even the album cover is hot. Keep it up YALL!!
