Album Review

The Miami-based Kriztal Entertainment is closely identified with the kinder, gentler side of electronica. Kriztal releases have generally been melodic and sleek, and in some cases, they have been downright lush. Emphasizing downtempo, chillout, and trip-hop, De-Phazz' seventh album, Days of Twang (which Kriztal licensed from Phazz-a-delic in Germany and distributed in the United States) is smooth, polished, and gently funky in a way that is quite typical of albums Kriztal has released or licensed. But Days of Twang has a quirky eccentricity that sets it apart from other discs in the Kriztal catalog. During the course of the album, De-Phazz incorporates elements of everything from soul, funk, blues, jazz, and reggae, to early rock & roll, and through it all, producer Pit Baumgartner (the brains behind this German outfit) never loses his dry sense of humor. The word "humor" generally isn't used in connection with CDs that Kriztal releases or licenses, but it is definitely applicable on clever items like "Rock n' Roll Dude," "Dancing with My Hands," "Le Petit Bastard," and "Boogie Philosophy." One of the best tracks is "Devil's Music," which contains samples of early rock & roll tunes and pokes fun at the far-right Christian fundamentalists who equate all rock music with Satanism. Most of the time, Days of Twang steers clear of the harder, more aggressive side of electronica. But the exception comes at the end of the 55-minute disc with two bonus tracks: an abrasive techno remix of the tune "How High the Hat," and a drum'n'bass/jungle remix of the soul-flavored "Hell Alright." Those bonus tracks are atypical of De-Phazz and atypical of Kriztal, although they are an interesting way to conclude the enjoyable and consistently ironic Days of Twang.

SmoothLounge.com Review

This exciting European nu jazz ensemble has joined forces with one of the coolest labels in the U.S. to release a sizzling hot project in time for summer: DAYS OF TWANG. The well-received DEPHAZZ has had six previous releases and maintains a hefty touring schedule all over Europe. It’s safe to assume that the tour will encompass the states in the near future as the praises of DAYS OF TWANG spread like a prairie fire. Over the years DEPHAZZ has appeared on over 100 compilations in all corners of the globe and has remixed the likes of Kool & The Gang, Lauryn Hill, Boy George, Ennio Morricone, A-Ha, Ella Fitzgerald and Kurtis Blow. They say there’s nothing new under the sun… Maybe that’s true, but mashing up vibey, down-tempo, jazzy dance/pop together with Americana twang IS. Clever is an understatement – I’d say ‘brilliant’ fits the bill better. I’m wondering if bandleader Pit Baumgartner loaded his iPod to mix a roulette sampling of Elvis, Charlie Parker, Charlie Daniels, Curtis Mayfield, Wes Montgomery and Patsy Cline to test his theory that the ingredients would indeed make for a delicious concoction. With super smart musical references, an abundance of humor and searing dance grooves, DAYS OF TWANG is a highly listenable recording stuffed full with 18 killer tracks in a wickedly unique setting.

This group is fabulous!

Not exactly, jazz, not exactly trip-hop or even electronica or lounge, but ecclectic and innovative. This album can be played over and over again without ever getting bored, but you WILL go hunting for other music they've created.

Kaleidoscopic Time Travel

I wonder how much more meaningful Days of Twang is to someone who has been with rock n roll from the start. Having heard it all, starting in the early to mid 1950s, it seems to me that Dephazz knows the entire canon and incorporates it all (everything inside and well outside rock n roll)...yet creates something entirely new. And how wonderful is Hell Alright? Totally wonderful. It's at the top of my list this month.

The prolific De-Phazz was a jazzy, lounge-oriented downtempo project led by German-Austrian producer Peter "Pit" Baumgartner, who surrounded himself with a shifting cast of collaborators that featured vocalists Barbara Lahr, Karl Frierson, and Pat Appleton, as well as drummer Oli Rubow. Albums like Detunized Gravity (1997), Godsdog (1999), Death by Chocolate (2001), Daily Lama (2002), Days of Twang (2007), and Big (2009) explored various terrains of 21st century lounge music, much of it balancing...
