Album Review

For their fifth album, Cordero have chosen to give their already prominent Latin influences a greater role in their musical formula, and not just because Ani Cordero sings all the songs on this disc in Spanish. On De Donde Eres ("Of Where You Are" in English), the indie rock underpinnings of their earlier work is still clearly visible on tunes like "La Musica Es la Medicina" and "Ruleta Rusa," but Ani Cordero's songs more explicitly draw upon both the sounds and the moods of Latin American music, embracing the palpable joy and sorrow of the melodies as well as the sensuous grooves of the rhythms. Trumpeter Omar Akil Little gets a bit more room to show off his talents on this disc than on their previous long-player, En Este Momento, and while many of these performances deal with nuance more than hip-shaking rhythm, bassist Eric Eble and drummer Chris Verene offer invaluable support, knowing when to nudge the melodies along and when to step on the gas. Fans not fluent in Spanish (much like this reviewer) will be at a loss to say just what these songs are about, but the feeling is clear throughout, and the nervy sass of "La Yegua," the potent dance pulse of "Abre La Ventana," and the whispery dynamics of "Guardasecretos" demonstrate just how strong and intuitive a band Cordero have become. At a mere 33 minutes, De Donde Eres doesn't give itself enough time to wear out its welcome, and though it's good enough to leave one wishing for more, the album's brevity works in its favor — Cordero show they can spread out without wasting their time on this album, and that's a key ingredient in their take on Latin sounds.

Brooklyn's Cordero Get The Recipie Right -New York Observer

Cordero's "De Donde Eres," ("Where Are You From") exemplifies the kind of true diversity that exists outside of a system that puts forth Solange Knowles as the symbol of wacky outsiderness. The band is nobody's little sister, and Pharrell didn't bless the album with even one production, but all the same the album blazes and crackles with life. Lead singer Ani Cordero founded the bilingual band in 1999 in Tucson, Arizona, initially playing with members of local, likeminded bands like Calexico and Giant Sand. After a move to New York, she recruited new collaborators, playing with members Rock*A*Teens (Ani's husband, Chris Verene), Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Interpol, and Sparklehorse. The sound blends traditional Latin music with indie rock, relying on a basic rock setup with plenty of horn and keyboard accents. On previous efforts the band played with harsher rock sounds, but here they have found a mellower spirit, with songs that flow gently and lyrics that look inward. "Guardasecretos" explores Cordero's inner emotional life, while opener "Quique" is a joyous dance number, "Ruleta Rusa" ("Russian Roulette") ponders ecological disaster and has Cordero singing to the earth like a lover: "You don't know how sorry I am." "La Yegua" ("The Mare") carries through a metaphor for female independence... The translation doesn't quite approximate Cordero's lilting, pretty Spanish, and the music itself embodies everything from Wilco's laidback Americana to Os Mutantes Brazilian psych swagger.

music is the medicine

My friend gave me De Donde Eres, and I just knew it was going to be good. My gut was right, this record rocks! Music really must be the universal language, because even though I don’t speak Spanish, I totally got it. You start out in the dancehall but by the end, look up and are in the mountains. Like all good artists, Cordero pairs the excitement of discovery with a hint of nostalgia. Listen again, for the first time.

de donde eres

One of the best albums of the year ,strong buy.

Biography

Formed: 1999 in Atlanta, GA

Genre: Alternativo & Rock Latino

Years Active: '90s, '00s

Revolving around the fractured tales of whispery-voiced namesake Ani Cordero, Cordero blend the angular sparseness of indie rock with the earthy vibe and sultry tone of Latin pop. Starting in Atlanta, GA, in 1999, the band was originally just Ani, a singing drummer lucky enough to have a role in the Man or Astro-Man? side project the Gamma Clones. A relocation to Tucson helped her develop her material better and by the next year, she recorded an album with Giant Sand alum Howe Gelb. The album was...
