iTunes Review

De-Plumed is less a “best-of” collection than an artistic summary of the Choir’s musical journey over the past 25 years. Founding members Derri Daughtery and Steve Hindalong selected one track from each of their albums, then re-recorded them in sparse acoustic form, dispensing from the atmospheric guitar effects that have often defined their work. Heard in this pristine form, the tunes can be more fully appreciated as deeply spiritual and compassionate meditations upon God, love, friendship and loss, told with insight and a touch of humor. Daughtery’s high tenor remains one of the most distinctive voices in Christian rock — he is in especially strong form on the bittersweet “Hey Gene” and the tender “A Sentimental Song.” “Clouds” captures the Choir at their most mystically reverent, while “Enough To Love” ranks among the most poetically graceful praise numbers in recent memory. Sixpence None the Richer’s Matt Slocum adds caressing cello textures at key moments.

2 new albums within 6 months - wha?

de-plumed; laid bare; exposed; featherless. Grammy nominated, Dove Award winning & critically acclaimed group The Choir has recorded twelve studio albums over the past twenty five years. With the input of their loyal fan-base, the group selected one song from each album and re-recorded them acoustically. Intimate and vulnerable renditions of classic and current material are augmented with expressive cello arrangements performed by Matt Slocum of Sixpence None The Richer.
Produced by Steve Hindalong and Derri Daugherty of The Choir (also City On A Hill/God Of Wonders).
Songs from de-plumed are represented from the following catalog of releases by The Choir:
1984 Voices in Shadows
1985 Shades Of Gray
1986 Diamonds and Rain
1988 Chase the Kangaroo
1989 Wide-Eyed Wonder
1990 Circle Slide
1993 Kissers and Killers
1994 Speckled Bird
1996 Free Flying Soul
2000 Flap Your Wings
2005 O How the Mighty Have Fallen
2010 Burning Like the Midnight Sun

Love it

With a song from each of their albums, masterfully re-done and stripped to its essentials, this collection is a must for all Choir fans.

One happy fool fan

Oh my, this is an amazing release. To me, it comes across a big "Thanks for listening" to all the fans, new and old. To hear the old stuff ("Dreams" and "15 Doors") redone is a real hoot. Whereas the original "Dreams" (on "Voices in the Shadows") sounds dated, this rendition is fresh and relevant. The cello work from Matt Slocum (Sixpence None the Richer) is such an elegant and fulfilling addition to the songs. It's great to hear Derri's vocals (stronger than ever) upfront singing Steve's lyrics. Great job, guys. Thank you for playing your music. I'll keep listening.
