Album Review
Before Type O Negative, there was really no such thing as goth metal. And the group that hails from the bowels of Brooklyn (not Transylvania, as some assume) is still at it, on their sixth studio album overall — and first for the SPV label — 2007's Dead Again. Unbelievably heavy sludge riffs are still a main ingredient, as well as singer Pete Steele's ongoing "Kill me, I'm in agony" lyrics, and vocals that sometimes sound quite Bela Lugosi-esque. The album-opening title track may very well be the most melodic song the band has ever recorded, but the Type O we all know and love is lurking right around the bend, especially on such tracks as "The Profits of Doom" (the album's original working title), "She Burned Me Down," and "An Ode to Locksmiths," the latter of which contains a guitar riff so Tony Iommi-esque that it sounds straight off of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. With Dead Again, Type O Negative delivers another album of dark tales and even darker riffs, and will reassure morose metalheads that they can still count on Steele to spread the misery.
Customer Reviews
This is NOT the "CLEAN LYRICS" version! YEAH!!!
This album is yet another great one coming from Type O Negative and harkens back to albums like Bloody Kisses and October Rust. It's supposedly the "Clean Lyrics" version...it's not! There's plenty of F words within the lyrics...so don't be confused and let that stop you from buying this stellar album from the "Drab Four." Peter cusses away and rules the day!
Alive and Well
After a four year absence from the music scene the TON boys are back with a great album. As with most of their works Dead Again is an acquired taste and will grow slowly on the willing listener. Most TON fans either enjoy their goth-metal sound a la Bloody Kisses or the deep dirge slow death of World Coming Down. Dead Again combines elements of their entire catalog with a refreshing and uncharacteristically positive lyrical theme. Songs like "September Sun" and the Sabbath-esque "An Ode to Locksmiths" are instant classics, yet its the epic 14-plus minute "These Three Things", "Tripping a Blind Man" and "Hail and Farewell to Britain" that well truly stand the test of time. The listener is best served to take an evening off, pour a glass or two of merlot, light a cigarette, and absorb this musical journey of death, despair, recovery, and hope.
Dead and Buried
I believe there are two types of Type O Negative fans: Fans of their early catalogue (Slow, Deep and Hard, Origin) and mid-career fans (Bloody Kisses, October Rust). I am a mid-career fan. If you are a mid-career fan like me, you will probably not like Dead Again very much. Josh Silver's keyboard is noticably absent from many of the tracks. All of the songs are at least mid-tempo -- much to the dismay of the fans of the wrist-cutting dirges. I was really excited for this album, but it let me down...and this is from someone that actually liked World Coming Down and parts of LIKM! Peter Steele professing his Christianity kind of threw me for a loop, too.
