Album Review

Bury Your Dead's eponymous fourth album introduced fans to a new lead singer (ex-Cassius vocalist Myke Terry), as well as a much broader focus on melody. That's not to say that the Boston-based metalcore outfit's previous releases aimed squarely for the mosh pit, but it was a substantial enough change to draw comparisons to melodic moshers like Avenged Sevenfold and Sparta. Listeners put off by the new formula will likely be disappointed with It's Nothing Personal, a 12-track juggernaut that blends machine gun riffs and assorted sonic brutalities with big, hooky choruses dripping with traditional emo lyrics like "Sorrow has become my only friend again," but BYD has both the chops and the vision to make it work. While some tracks shoot out of the ear as quickly as they went in, highlights like "Hurting Not Helping," "Broken Body," and "Swan Song" are bright enough to eclipse the occasional slab of mediocrity. Even "Without You," a typical sad sack, aggro-dude tale of heartbreak, rises above its clichéd subject matter, and when Terry audibly clears his throat before declaring, "Turn your head and run/this is the worst it's ever been" it's a thing of primal and dismal beauty.

My ears bled for days

I refuse to call this Bury Your Dead. They died when Bruso left. This album is an insult to my intelligence and every fans loyalty. I can understand if you're going to put some clean vocals in. That's fine but 1. they went way to far with it and 2. make sure you have someone that is actually a good singer because Myke seriously sounds horrible. To me the album didn't flow. When i listened to Bury Your Dead back in the day i used to get pumped, angry, and every song i could listen to over and over. When i listened to this non bury your dead to bad to be called crap album every song was painful to listen to and i had gauze in my ears for days. I'll always be a fan of Bury Your Dead and cherish pre self titled. Do not get this album if you are a true BYD fan. No self respecting fan of true BYD would like this crap.

im a hater

ok lets set the record straight. bury your dead is a hardcore band. not a metal band, not a metalcore band. this new album made me puke. not because they have progressed musically. im a huge fan of bands taking steps forward as they have. im not gonna say they sold out for that reason. but ive been going to hardcore shows since i was 12. and i have seen bury your dead more times than i can count for less then 8 bucks. these guys made progress yes, but his album isnt hardcore in anysense. its garbage, and its not bury your dead. lyrics are emo as f**k, and he sings like a 8 yr old boy. breakdowns...yea sure...five finger death punch has breakdowns and they are terrible as well. HATEBREED went "mainstream" and really didnt change a thing. i dont get why HARDCORE bands go on ozzfest, raise admission prices and feel that they now need to appeal to tiny bopper chicks and dudes that wear womens pants and wear make up. i dunno..garbage. call me a hater.

What happened

Terrible. If you are going to change your style this drastically, change the name of your band. Thank god for the ability to preview albums. Surprised Victory even put this out.

Biography

Formed: 2001 in Boston, MA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Growing tired of their metalcore band, Hamartia, guitarist Slim (aka Brendan MacDonald) and drummer Mark Castillo began Bury Your Dead as a side project in late 2001. Drawing influence from Sevendust and Crowbar, the band was used as a vehicle for the pair to focus more on mosh-worthy hardcore rather than the technical nature of Hamartia. Recruiting bassist Rich Casey (ex-Groundzero) and vocalist Joe Krewko, the Massachusetts-based outfit — priding itself on blending ferocity with fun —...
