Customer Reviews
For Fans of Deadwood Only
If you are a fan of the show and love music, this is a must have - 5 Stars. For fans, the dialog clips are initially sweet little nuggets that make you want to go replay the offending episode from Season 1 or 2. But even fans will program around the dialog tracks after 3-4 plays. The music alone is wonderfull. However, why must I buy the whole album when I would otherwise just pan out the dust and keep the rocks by David Schwartz, Gustavo Santaolalla, JC Cash, and ML Scott? Al Swearengen has a word for people that would make him pay for the whole bottle when all he wants are 3 shots...it's the 8th word on Track 3!
Brilliant Soundtrack
This is a fantastic collection of classic and contemporay Americana. The music that fits so perfectly into the credits and briefly throughout the episodes also function well on their own. Many of these songs are nearly impossible to come across any other way so purchasing the whole album is no waste. The excerpts from the show are amusing but grow tiresome even to the most devote fan. However, on the whole this album is well worth the $12.
Deadwood Rising
What a great treat! This is just like the show itself: comes out of nowhere, takes you for a wild ride and leaves you just grinning stupidly. An exhilarating compilation of blues, country, old Americana, a capella singing, atmospheric instrumental pieces, plus snippets of dialogue, including the Words of Wisdom from Al "Swedgin", surely the greatest and most complex villain to appear on our TV screens in ages. His little speech about "what life is" is just the thing you need when life gets you down- its uplifting effect is only compared to that of the frying pan scene in Clint Eastwood's "Joe Kidd." Calamity Jane singing and cursing through "Row row row your boat"- that's another great moment. My only tiny little complaint is that some excellent pieces are way too short, the title music, for example, but then there's no arguing with this soundtrack's flow. If you look at the song titles- some of which you may know, like The Circle by June Carter Cash, it may seem like a strange motley group, but the whole thing works like a snake charm. I find that every time I play the first track, I end up listening to the whole CD again and again. This "explicit" iTunes version is not for the faint hearted; if you don't like cuss words, look elsewhere. I don't quite get the complaints about the swearing on the show- this surely comes from the people who thought that the brutal and realistic rape scene in the Sopranos was "too unpleasant"- but just be warned that this is not Nickleodeon TV Special. Welcome to Deadwood!
