iTunes Review
With a different lineup (both Stuart David and Isobel Campbell were now working with other bands) and big-name pop producer Trevor Horn on board, Dear Catastrophe Waitress signaled a new direction for Belle & Sebastian. Featuring some of the best hooks and catchiest melodies of their career, the album is upbeat and assured, finely crafted and complex. Over the course of a dozen dizzyingly tuneful tracks, Stuart Murdoch delivers his quirky, wry lyrics with noticeable confidence. Moving from the deliberately lo-fi aesthetic of their first few recordings, the overall sound here is rich and full and features a range of textures, including excellent horns, strings, keyboards, and some subtly effective sonic touches. Highlights include the jazzy rhythm of “If She Wants Me” and “You Don’t Send Me,” to the Smiths-inspired “Wrapped Up in Books,” to the theatrical sweep of “If You Find Yourself in Love.” Dear Catastrophe Waitress may not be as groundbreaking as their earlier work, but it’s not a radical departure either — more like a logical step forward — and the result is a stunning collection of clever and endlessly intriguing songs.
Customer Reviews
Genius and sheer perfection
Talk about an album that never loses its flavor. I am a huge Belle & Sebastian fan, and this album is my personal favorite. Every song is gold. You will not be disappointed through till the conclusion of track 12..in fact, you will probably be inclined to play the album through once more. Every track provides ingenious lyrics laced amidst its own unique story. While some albums provide a few tracks that make the album.. and a lot of those songs you skip every time, each one on this album is a delight.
Hear me out...
When I first heard of Belle & Sebastion I listened to a couple clips of them on iTunes and thought to my self "Meh, I don't care for them". Then, later on the Juno soundtrack I heard "Piazza, New York Catcher"... That is now one of my favorite songs of all time!!! I still do not care for them too much, but I greatly respect their music and am more open to them... Heck, that song made me listen to them more and I found the wonderful song "The Fox In The Snow"... I enjoy the more folky side of their music I guess... Now if some of you other more hardcore B&S fans could point me in the direction of some other songs in the same mold as those two, I would be much in your debt... Just for "Piazza, New York Catcher" this album gets five stars!
Brilliant!
This album is, as are all the other Belle & Sebastian albums, absolutely amazing. The tunes are catchy and original; I never get tired of listening to them. I'd try to do a track-by-track review, but I'd end up giving each and every song five stars. If I had to name favorites, I guess I'd say (in the order in which they appear on the album) Step Into My Office, Baby, If She Wants Me, I'm a Cuckoo, and Wrapped Up In Books. But I love all of the songs on here, so, really, if you're wondering, just buy the whole album. It's worth far more than ten dollars.
