Album Review

Another garage-y indie rock band, this time from Denmark, the Blue Van doesn't really do anything new or memorable on their sophomore album, Dear Independence, and unfortunately for the quartet, it's everyone else around them that are doing the same shtick so much better. It's not that the band's trashy, blues-influenced rock is necessarily bad, it's just rather boring when compared to all the Jet and White Stripes types of the world. The Blue Van don't have the attitude or sexuality of Louis XIV, and they're sorely missing the sheer energy of the Hives. What listeners are left with is a collection of relatively grainy mid-tempo rock songs that on occasion hit the mark, as with the lovely "The Poet Tree" or the acoustic playfulness of "Momentarily Sane," but otherwise leave listeners wanting something more. Dear Independence is enjoyable enough for those fans of the aforementioned groups looking for something new, just don't expect anything mind-blowing — fun or otherwise — coming out of your speakers.

Love this album!

This album is wonderful. I bought it primarily because I loooooove the song Don't Leave Me Blue (I really think this track is The Blue Van's finest), and I had listened to most of the tracks on Pandora, so I had a better idea of what I was buying. I didn't expect the whole album to be so fantastic. It's one of the few albums I enjoy listening to from beginning to end and it gets better the louder you listen to it! There's no better contemporary band to listen to if you want classic sound.

Not on the Bandwagon!

This is a very good album, don't let the iTunes review fool you. The "trashy, blues-influenced rock" is not trashy at all. I personally don't hear a lot of bands that sound like them, so they're pretty original to me. They're style is awesome and so are their songs!

dont't listen to itunes

After listening to all there albums I've pretty much listened to this album the most. literaly my Itunes says I've listened to "Don't leave me blue" and "My Indpendence" like 50 times. And I've only had the album for maybe 3 weeks. The other songs are good, I like them all really. DON"T listen to the itunes review, this band is great. With there clear influence from older bands, if you like songs from the 70-80's you will love this band, and if you don't try there latest album which to my subtle disliking is more modern. They have a bit of everything. If you're new I would suggest you start with this album. All in all good album, good band.

Growing up in rural Broenderslev, Denmark, Steffen Westmark (vocals/guitars), Søren V. Christensen (Hammond organ), Allan F. Villadsen, and Per M. Jorgenson (drums) were inspired by the classics — Cream, Kinks, Pretty Things, Them — and they used that hard R&B, primal rock influence to drive the revivalist sound of the Blue Van. The combo moved to Copenhagen in 2003 and scored gigs at rock festivals like Spot 9 and Roskilde. That exposure helped land them a deal, and a five-song EP...
