Album Review
The full-length debut by the Devil Wears Prada shows that as dubious as the concept of Christian metal might sound to the unconvinced (and/or the unsaved), it's not necessarily an intrinsically bad idea. This Dayton quintet is fairly wide-ranging in its influences, flavoring the standard blastbeats-and-unison-riffs template songs with keyboards out of European symphonic metal, emo-tinged clean vocals (courtesy of guitarist Jeremy DePoyster) and, most surprisingly, a sense of playfulness that's largely missing from both CCM and metal. Even aside from some jokey song titles ("Who Speaks Spanish, Colon Quesadilla"), there's a lightness of spirit evident in these songs that elevates Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord above the standard-issue metal ghetto. Essentially a re-recording of the band's 2005 debut EP, Patterns of a Horizon, plus two excellent new songs, "Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over" and "Texas Is South," this album features better sound and tighter arrangements than the debut, rendering the earlier record necessary only for completists.

whoa......
Man, I took WAY too long to write a review for these guys. I had this album before they were even ON iTunes. Gosh. Oh well. Let's just get this straight: These guys are mindblowingly amazing. If you like ANY type of hardcore, they are for you. I found out about them from my friend. I asked, "what style are they?" and he just smiled and said, "Okay, every single band that you like.... they're that." Well, okay. I checked them out and it was like heaven raining down. And I'll tell you why. The vocals are utterly insane. Mike Hranica has to easily be on the top five best screamers in the world list. He has more range than almost anyone I've ever heard. Think of the ferocity of Josh Scogin from old Norma Jean mixed with the range of Spencer Chaimberlain from UnderOATH (but even MORE range) and you have Mike. It's mostly a low scream, but he can get pretty high when he wants to, but his deep, death metal growls are the most impressive. An exceptional screamer, let me tell you. Oh, and Jeremy's clean singing is a great contrast. His voice is very smooth and precise, and while being high pitched, not whiny or annoying. The vocals are the thing that stand out the most on this CD. HOWEVER, the musicianship is not far behind. Dig pinch harmonics? Heh heh. Man, is this a treat for you. They're all over the place. These guys use the full spectrum of things that you can do on the guitar (save for sweeping and classic metal guitar solos). They do everything you WANT them to do, let's just say that. Dive bombs, slides, pick slides, harmonics in general. Everything. The drumming is pretty good too. It doesn't particularly stand out (certainly not like As I Lay Dying. I don't know what that guy was thinking), but it's not bad in any way. The keyboard is utilized beautifully. Yeah, they do do the techno thing ever so once and a while, but not to an annoying point. Mostly, they use the strings setting on the synthesizer (mmm....) and there's a lot of grand piano (more mmm....) If you're looking for that, check out the last half of And the Sentence Trails Off. Amazing. Then, there's the fact that they're like seven genres in one. BUY DOGS CAN GROW BEARDS ALL OVER. This is a perfect example of that. It starts off as pretty normal hardcore with a catchy opening riff, but, before ya' know it, they're going into pure, bone crunching death metal. Chunky break downs and some of the most intense growling you'll ever hear. Then, they transition into a little more of a grindcore approach with a bit of the spaziness of The Chariot and newer UnderOATH. Then, out of nowhere, SOUTHERN ROCK. If you're a Maylene fan, get this song, dude. One of the most rockin' southern rock riffs I've EVER heard. It would make Dallas Taylor proud. Then, they transition into pure, epicly melodic emocore with Jeremy stepping up to the mic. That's a short summary. The songs that you NEED are Gauntlet of Solitude, DCGBAO, And the Sentence Trails Off, Swords, Dragons, and Diet Coke, Who Speaks Spanish..., Texas Is South, Modeify the Pronounciation, and Salvation (an awesome, mellow but powerful instrumental song until the very end when it explodes). Seriously, do NOT miss this album. You're iPod will love you for it.
Perfect
Ok so to all of you comparing these guys to As I Lay Dying, Haste The Day, Norma Jean, ect. wow. Ok so i have listened to every kind of metal ever from Grindcore to Hardcore (not HxC) to Scremo and this band stand out the most. They truely have the most original style i have ever heard and you really have to appreciate metal for what it is. The only band i can comare them to truely is Between the Buried and Me. The Devil Wears Prada has the best synth work i have ever heard from any band. Their guitar utilizes most styles (hyperpicking, non distorted chording, brutal heavy palm mutes, harmonics, pinch harmonics, slides, and just pure hardcore riffs) and is purely original and incredible. There are other aspects to drums other than double bass such as the symbol slides (texas is south). Bass slides are uniquely thrown in. Vocals cover every aspect from high screams to bre to clean. this band is just amazing.
Utterly fantastic, heavy yet beautiful
Dear Love: A Beautiful Discord, the new album by Rise Records own The Devil Wears Prada far exceeded the high expectations I had for it. This group of 6 young men from Dayton, Ohio are putting out some of the harshest, most brutal hardcore music around today; yet at the same time, the very same music can be soft and beautiful. It is truely astounding this fusion of sounds that The Devil Wears Prada has managed to combine. Everything from Boston hardcore, all the way to Southern Rock. Make no mistake, The Devil Wears Prada is not your cookie cutter hardcore band. Their unique sounds comes from Mike Hranica's bone chilling scream, Jeremy DePoyster's mind blowing voice and the expert instrumentation, made all the more melodic by James Baney's key work. If your looking for something different from your everyday hardcore scene, this is for you.
