iTunes Review

The soul-searching that this Midwest-based jam band pursues on Death By Stereo is anchored by an ambitious sound that deftly combines prog-rock, jazz fusion and ‘90s-era indie pop. Their latest songs touch upon each of these disparate genres, with an acoustic-folk instrumental (“Dim Sum”) added for good measure. The sextet’s ability to deliver chomping riff-rock is displayed on “Domino Theory,” while “Search 4” and “Wellwishers” are animated by percolating keyboards and subtle rhythmic shifts. The funky strut of “Deeper” and elegant slink of “Booth Love” contrast nicely with the billowing, Jerry Garcia-esque atmospherics of “The Floor.” If the album’s lyrics are heavy on self-analysis and jittery philosophizing, a final sense of acceptance is found in “Hajimemashite,” a show-stopping progressive number filled with guitar pyrotechnics and lush strings. After a decade-plus of record making, any band might wonder about their sense of creative direction. Not to worry — Death By Stereo is a strong affirmation that Umphrey’s McGee is on the right road.

Umphrey's McGee: Variety Is King on DBS

This album really represents the band perfectly. A great mix of different genres, it ebbs and flows smoothly and covers a great deal of space, from 80's synth pop (Miami Virtue), to White Stripes-esque garage rock (Domino Theory), to sexy 70's era funk (Booth Love), and hard rock (Search 4, The Floor). Songs like Conduit and Hajimemashite showcase their excellent (and underrated) songwriting abilities while presenting what could best be identified as the band's "signature sound". The two bonus tracks here are both enjoyable. We Believe is a nice quick jolt of positive energy, but the real highlight is Go To Hell, which is just a heavy beast of an instrumental, very much in the vein of Wizard Burial Ground. Overall, this album is a nice change up from the heavy, progressive Mantis. It represents the band focusing on what they do best; playing an eclectic mix of songs that bounce from genre to genre without warning. Umphrey's is the perfect band for the ADD generation, but what makes it work is that they excel at each genre they tackle in a completely enjoyable, genuine, and non ironic way. Death By Stereo is just another great chapter in their continually growing repertoire and represents their most accessible album yet without alienating the hardcore fans of their progressive improv style.

Great Album, Guys!

Amazing studio versions of long-time live favorites, as well as some amazing new songs being debuted now on tour! A must have for any Umphreak.

If you have a chance to catch them now on tour … go. see. them. The guys are bringing the noise every night.

Keep it coming!

Okay UM fans...let's step it up here. I know you are out there. I have seen you at a show or two. As you know, we are fortunate to have tuned in to a band with such diversity and talent. There is nothing like listening to Umphrey's McGee while driving though a blinding snow storm or kicked back on a beach somewhere. Whatever the occasion, the music is always a treat. Of course, the best place for me to listen is while standing in the crowd at the Orange Peel. It will always be that way with this band. Live baby! As for this excellent new recording, well anything that comes from these gentlemen is going to be a treat for the ears. Some of my favorite albums took a while for me to really "get it". Ask me six months from now and my favorite DBS song will be a different one than it is today...that's the way it is with great music. I am looking forward to "getting to know" this record over the next few months. In time, it will be like an old friend. For now, roll the windows down in this beautiful fall weather and enjoy the new music!

A jam band coming out of the Midwest in the mid-'90s, Umphrey's McGee edged toward the Frank Zappa side of the improv rock scale, as opposed to the Grateful Dead/Allman Brothers Band direction espoused by many of their contemporaries, like the Big Wu.
